Overall Meaning

In Stephen Marley's The Mission, the lyrics speak of a message meant for the youth. The message aims to inspire youth to develop a plan and have ambition for their future while being firm in knowing where they stand in Armageddon. The lyrics encourage them to follow their traditions as evident from the line: "Him know him poopa set it so him follow tradition." The song also reveals that knowledge is the key and that it will set the people free, as demonstrated by Marcus Garvey's philosophy of reading. The ideology of African unity as proposed by Haile in philosophy is also highlighted. Rap artists should focus on producing songs that will inspire and educate listeners instead of rapping about how much money, how many girls, and how many people they killed. By doing so, it only creates more youth especially black youth to lead a life of chaos, violence, and the rejection of education. This song acknowledges that all humans are equal regardless of race, country or religion. Good message, very important.
