He is one of the few people to win an Academy Award, multiple Tony Awards, multiple Grammy Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.
Sondheim has been writing for the American Musical Theatre for the past four decades. His breakthrough musical Company revolutionized the art form. He is considered by many to be the finest living composer of our time.
His scores include Passion, Assassins, Bounce, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George, Merrily We Roll Along, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, A Little Night Music, Follies, Company, The Frogs, Anyone Can Whistle, and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to The Forum, as well as the lyrics for Gypsy and West Side Story.
He studied composition with the legendary avant-garde composer Milton Babbitt. Sondheim says that when he asked Babbitt if he could study atonality, Babbitt replied "You haven’t exhausted tonal resources for yourself yet, so I’m not going to teach you atonal." Sondheim agreed, and despite frequent dissonance and a highly chromatic style, his music remains resolutely tonal.
A notable aspect of Sondheim's songwriting is the use of complex and innovative rhyme patterns that "delight the ear."

This song like "I Remember" from Evening Primrose shows the skill Sondheim has perfectly crafting dramatic honesty for the character. There isn't a word that the character uses that isn't drawn from her environment. "An inch of sky" "Two ton child running wild upstairs" "Steampipes bang, sirens clang" and indeed the whole song puts us precisely where the character is. Liz Callaway trusts those lyrics and then sets her rendition above others by using that same precision in her vocal choices. The tension between lyrics that describe squalor and the voice that soars with joy makes great drama. Check out her recording of "I Remember" and see if you agree she lets it shine too.

None other than Bill Rudman of "Footlight Parade" and "On the Aisle" fame dubbed the 1983 performance by this artist as the definitive recording. Given the absolute breadth of covers this once obscure early Sondheim ditty has spawned, that is one helluva feat.

That's so nice! Thank you for letting me know.
Michelle
I’m seriously jamming you I walk in the park of course clandestinely I don’t want to draw attention but I’m totally singing you while I walk it’s hilarious I love the song thanks again. Your truly inspired me on my path when I was doing musical theater too. Your voice is just gorgeous thanks again
Liz Callaway
I love that you sing with me when you walk!
George Howe
Frickin' flawless, as it was in '83.
Liz Callaway
Thanks George!

Thanks for sharing, Liz. It’s a wonderful but rarely heard song. Great rendition!
