Down The Road
Stephen Stills Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a young man
Standin' in the door
The room was dark and smokey
The smell of death befo' me

Think I'll go down Mama
Go on down the road
See what's goin' on
Down the road

Lotsa friends and chirren
Layin' in the grass
Hookah makes me crazy
Believe I'm goin' have to pass

Then you find your cocaine
Start to movin' fast
Trip, stumble, fall, freeze up
Hope your body last

Drinkin' plenty good liquor
Bourbon twelve years old
Heroine, just in time
Worst trip that I know

Some people into Jesus
Other people into Zen
I'm just into everyday
I don't hide from where I been

I just go down Mama
Go on down the road

See what's goin' on
Down the road

Overall Meaning

The song “Down the Road” by Stephen Stills with his band Manassas paints a picture of a young man standing in a smoke-filled room. The air reeks with the smell of death and he’s contemplating his next move. He decides to go down the road, perhaps hoping to escape the morbid ambiance. As he wanders, he comes across friends and kids lying on the grass, smoking hookah and getting high. But the last thing he wants is to overdose and suffer a terrible trip. He warns that the rush of cocaine can make one lose control and end up stumbling or freezing. He drinks the tastiest bourbon, but even that can’t protect him from the dangers of heroin. He’s aware that some seek salvation in religion or spiritual enlightenment, while others find peace in everyday life. But for him, going down the road is a way of discovering the truth, no matter how harsh or painful it may be.
