Sit Down I Think I Love You
Stephen Stills & Richie Furay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sit down I think I love you
Anyway I'd like to try
I can't stop thinking of you
If you go I'll know I cry

Can't you see that I'm a desperate man
I get high, just being around
You want to know
What they say about the bird in my hand
And that's why I ain't leaving without you

So if you want someone to love you
Pretty babe I'm your guy
It's not much I'm asking of you
Just please give me a try

Can't you see that I'm a desperate man
I get high, just being around
You want to know
What they say about the bird in my hand
And that's why I ain't leaving without you

So if you want someone to love you
Pretty babe I'm your guy
It's not much I'm asking of you
Just please give me a try

Sit down I think I love you
Sit down I think I love you

Sit down I think I love you
Sit down I think I love

Overall Meaning

In 'Sit Down I Think I Love You', Stephen Stills and Richie Furay's vocal harmonies are warm and inviting whilst the acoustic guitar riff is catchy and memorable. Stills' voice is syrupy, as he confesses that he has fallen in love with someone and wants them to reciprocate their feelings. Despite his assurance, however, it becomes clear that he is rudderless in the face of his yearning. The verses warn of his desperation, reminding his lover that he is on tenterhooks because of her, while the chorus is an appeal for her to "sit down and let [him] love her". Although the lyrics are minimal, it is clear that his heart is in the right place.

One interpretation of the track is that it is similar to '60s pop tunes about uncontainable love. This song seems motivated by a powerful longing that requires a direct response; somebody needs to sit down and listen to what Stills has to say. This pleading tone is offset by the laid-back grooves, which give the impression that Stills is inviting the listener to come along with him on whatever romantic adventure he has in mind. According to one interpretation, the song is an invitation to engage in a passionate interlude rather than a long-term commitment. The song's light-hearted tone is all the more impressive given the seriousness of its message.

* The song was written by Stephen Stills and is led by a catchy acoustic guitar riff.
* It was the first single to be released from Buffalo Springfield's self-titled debut album.
* The song was largely ignored upon its release, and it was not until years later that it received wider recognition.
* Despite not being a huge commercial success at the time of its release, it has been covered by many well-known artists such as Madonna and Waxahatchee.
* Buffalo Springfield was a short-lived band, lasting just two years from 1966 until 1968, but they had a significant influence on the folk rock movement of the 1960s.
* Stills went on to have a successful career as a solo artist and as a member of supergroups Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Stills-Young Band.
* Richie Furay went on to form the country rock band Poco after Buffalo Springfield disbanded.
* The song's lyrics were inspired by Stills' experiences with women and relationships, as he was known for his romantic pursuits.
* The song has been covered by French singer Françoise Hardy, whose version became a hit in France.
* The song's title inspired the title of the 1992 film 'Love Crimes' starring Sean Young and Patrick Bergin.
