Overall Meaning

Thanks Al! I'm honored that you commented. Saw you a couple of times in Louisville several years ago. Your performances with Studio Two were the highlight for me at 'Abbey Road On The River'. This is what I call a great stereo mix for speakers only , it sounds great. Why don't you do like they did with the old capital processed stereo mixes and make the same mix but fill up the stereo field overall like a radio mix. It will sound really good for the headphones.

Thank you! I'll have to revisit some of those Capitol processed stereo mixes. I never really liked their duophonic mixes in the headphones, or speakers for that matter also!

@@britt2001b It's funny , most people don't like those mixes including the beatles but I think they were extremely effective and I enjoy them. They had to do them that way to make them sound good on radio. In fact some of those fake stereo mixes were really smart in the way they were done. They would have the vocals bleeed in with instruments from one channel to the other. I don't even know how they did that. They must of have access to the original masters and used really warm compressors to make another stereo mix. You can't even do that with todays plugins to get the same sound. Sometimes doing it the original organic way by bouncing everything and using room nose is a lost art. Many 60s records were done like that including the Mama & Papas records. They needed much more tracks for all the overdubing of the vocals and it worked. It would sound dull so they would add percussion like tamborine and some high end lead vocals to make is sound clear. It's a old trick used a lot by Phil Spector. If you striped the tamborine and lead vocals the music will sound dull but fat due to all the overdubs.

I agree playing the walls of a recording studio is certainly a lost art in this day and age of digital processing. The Duophonic process that never sounded good to me was when they put the lows in one channel and the highs on the other. With headphones it made me think I was listening with one ear plugged up! I grew up the the Capitol 'Dexterized' added reverb on many of their early U.S. releases. I was floored with how much better the initial British releases sounded when I finally heard them. I think Capitol was trying to conform them to what the younger U.S. audience was used to at that time. You hit the 'nose on the head' with your description of the Spector recordings. I remember thinking 'how can they sound so muddy and clear at the same time!'.
