The band reached mainstream success with the release of Performance and Cocktails (and its promotional singles "The Bartender and the Thief", "Just Looking" and "Pick a Part That's New") in 1999 and have achieved a total of ten top-ten singles as well as one number one: "Dakota" (2005). Check My Eyelids for Holes
Stereophonics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I swallow honey
Is my stand up show still that funny
Am I back for good
I said that I said that I would be
She's down waist low
Trying to make me happy
Because I like watching you
My check my eye lids
Check for holes
Two weeks late I gotta test
For babies shop take is falling low
I'm not going back back to the factory's
Because I like what I do
It's time I tried tried to check
My check my eye lids
Check for holes
The lyrics of the song “Check My Eyelids for Holes” by Stereophonics are a reflection on the doubts and anxieties that plague someone in the public eye. The song opens with the singer expressing the need to lose weight, possibly for aesthetic reasons or to conform to societal expectations. The line “I swallow honey” suggests that the singer is trying to make some sort of drastic change by taking something sweet, perhaps as a form of dieting.
The next lines deal with the singer’s doubts about their profession. “Is my stand up show still that funny?” hints that the singer is a comedian, struggling with the fear that their jokes might be getting stale. However, the next line “Am I back for good, I said that I would be” shows that the singer is trying to convince themselves of their commitment to their job.
The only other character mentioned in the song is a woman, who is trying to make the singer happy. It's unclear whether she is a significant other or a fan, but the singer enjoys watching her. The last few lines of the song refer to the singer being two weeks late and needing to test for babies. The exact meaning of these lyrics is unclear, but the line "shop take is falling low" suggests that it might be related to something financial. The song ends with the repeated command to "check my eyelids for holes," which can be interpreted in many ways but is likely a metaphor for self-examination and self-doubt.
