Have a Nice Day
Stereophonics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

San Francisco Bay, past pier thirty-nine
Early PM, can't remember what time
Got the waiting cab stopped at the red light
Address, unsure of but it turned out just right

It started straight off, "coming here is Hell"
That's his first words, we asked what he meant
He said, "Where you from?" we told him a lot
We take a holiday, is this what you want?

To have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Lie around all day, have a drink to chase
Yourself and tourists, yeah, that's what I hate
He said, "We're going wrong", we've all become the same
We dress the same ways, only our accents change

So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Swim in the ocean, that be my dish
I drive around all day and kill processed fish
It's all money gum, no artists anymore
You're only in it now to it make more, more and more

So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Overall Meaning

The song "Have a Nice Day" by Stereophonics talks about the mundanity of everyday life and how society has become too materialistic. The opening lines describe San Francisco Bay as the setting of the song, and the singer not remembering what time it is. The singer then takes a cab and tells the driver that coming to San Francisco has been a miserable experience.

The driver asks where the singer is from, and he replies with "We take a holiday, is this what you want?" which is a critique of commercialism and capitalism in everyday life. Later in the song, the driver talks about how everyone is the same, and everyone is only in it for money. He criticizes the lifestyle of chasing money and says that there are no artists anymore. The only things that matter are money and fame.

The chorus, "Have a nice day" is repeated throughout the song, ironically juxtaposing the negative themes of the song against a superficially positive phrase. The song is an analysis of modern society and how it has become a cycle of consumption and conformity.
