Hurry Up and Wait
Stereophonics Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We wait to wake to get a ride in the rain
Buy a ticket they can check we can claim
So we don't spend what's our own for a
Seat a place to stop a green light a red
Cross they run around naked doing old
Things like the ones before
Wait for a break so you can take a little
Something that'll make your next break
Come along a little quicker than the one
Before wait for an answer spy a sweet
Dancer as she walks from the door of the
Hall wish you waited for your wedding
Vows so hurry up and wait
But what's worth waiting for?
We wait to get warm the car starts from
Cold stall to make a first move magazines
Made the rules to make us lose wait for
Your dream man the house you could both
Plan the car in the sales ad the wet dream
With the man you wished that you had
A watched pot never boils
Sugars seconds to dissolve
See your appetite lost
Foods relevance is lost inside
So hurry up and wait
But what's worth waiting for?
So join the queue me and you

Wait in line
It takes our time to be satisfied

Overall Meaning

The song Hurry Up and Wait by Stereophonics explores the theme of waiting, and how it is a constant, often frustrating, aspect of life. It starts by describing waiting for a ride in the rain, waiting in line to buy a ticket, and waiting for a green light or a red cross. The lyrics then delve deeper into how waiting can be a source of hope - waiting for a break, waiting for an answer, waiting for a dream to come true. At the same time, waiting can also be a source of despair when what is hoped for never materializes.

The lyrics also touch upon societal expectations that dictate waiting as a necessary part of life: waiting for a relationship, waiting for a house, waiting to buy a car. The song suggests that these rules are created by society and that they often result in a feeling of loss, with the relevance of waiting fading quickly. The song also highlights how our impatience can lead to a lack of satisfaction - we hurry up and wait, but what are we really waiting for?

In conclusion, Hurry Up and Wait is a poignant song that muses on the theme of waiting, showing how it can be both positive and negative in its impact on our lives. It suggests that we should question the societal expectations that lead to endless waiting, and focus instead on finding satisfaction in the present.

We wait to wake to get a ride in the rain
Buy a ticket they can check we can claim
So we don't spend what's our own
For a seat a place to stop a green light
A red cross they run around naked
Doing old things like the ones before

Wait for a break so you can take a little
Something that'll make your next break
Come along a little quicker than the one before
Wait for an answer spy a sweet dancer
As she walks from the door of the hall
Wish you waited for your wedding vows

So hurry up and wait

So hurry up and wait
But what's worth waiting for?

From cold stall to make the first move
Magazines made the rules to make us lose

The car in the sales add the wet dream
With the man you wish that you had

So hurry up and wait
But what's worth waiting for?

But what's worth waiting for?

A watched pot never boils sugar
Seconds to dissolve see your appetite
Lost foods relevance is lost inside

We wait to get there and when we get there
We wait around for anyone to
Tell us what we even got there for

So hurry up and wait
But what's worth waiting for?

I miss this Sterephonics line-up. I was 22 when this was released, pregnant with my first child and my partner had buggered off to stick his willy into someone else! Anyway, I consoled myself by playing this over and over again and I still love it as much now as I did then. I’m now a mum of three kids who’ve all left home and I’ve been married 20 years. Turns out getting binned by an arsehole was a blessing in disguise! Love to everyone out there who’s going through a rough time.....good tunes and a shit-load of chocolate will get you through. Much love from the Scottish highlands 👍🏻❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
