It Means Nothing
Stereophonics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do we take in what's been said?
Do we take the time to be
All the things we said we'd be
And we bury heads in sand
But my future's in my hands
It means nothing
It means nothing
You can find yourself a God
Believe in which one you want
'Cause they love you all the same
They just go by different names
When we fly our flag today
Are you proud or just ashamed?
It means nothing
It means nothing
[Chorus]
It means nothing
It means nothing
It means nothing
If I haven't got you
If I haven't got you
If I haven't got you
If I haven't got you
And the sun sets in the sky
You're the apple of my eye
If the bomb goes off again
In my brain or on the train
I hope that I'm with you
'Cause I wouldn't know what to do
It means nothing
It means nothing
[Chorus]
If I haven't got you
You, you
Oh,
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
(It means nothing)
The song "It Means Nothing" by Stereophonics is a reflective piece which explores the struggle to find meaning and purpose in life. The opening lines of the song, "Did we lose ourselves again? Do we take in what's been said?" speak to the idea that individuals may feel disconnected from themselves and their surroundings. The lyrics suggest that people often fail to follow through on their intentions and dreams, choosing instead to bury their heads in the sand. The idea of taking control of one's future is presented in the line "But my future's in my hands," yet it is not acted upon, resulting in a feeling of apathy and a sense that life is empty and meaningless.
The chorus further emphasizes this sense of futility, with the statement "It means nothing" repeated multiple times. The lyrics suggest that even religion and patriotism, which are commonly used as sources of meaning and purpose, are ultimately empty and devoid of real value. The song concludes with the sentiment that, in the face of life's uncertainties and chaos, the only thing that truly matters is love and human connection.
Some possible interpretations of the song include feelings of ennui in modern life, existential crises, or a critique of societal values. The emotional weight of the song is carried by the lead singer's plaintive and understated delivery, which captures the sense of disillusionment and sadness that permeates the lyrics.

Did we lose ourselves again?
Have we become lost again in our own lives?
Do we take in what's been said?
Do we truly listen to the words that have been spoken?
Do we take the time to be
Do we make the effort to become
All the things we said we'd be
The person we promised ourselves we'd become
And we bury heads in sand
We ignore what is happening around us
But my future's in my hands
It's up to me to control my own life
It means nothing
Nothing has any true significance
You can find yourself a God
You can choose your own religion
Believe in which one you want
Have faith in the religion you choose
'Cause they love you all the same
Because all gods care for their followers equally
They just go by different names
Different religions have different names for their gods
When we fly our flag today
When we celebrate our country and its identity today
Are you proud or just ashamed?
Do you feel proud or embarrassed?
It means nothing
Celebrating one's country has no true significance
If I haven't got you
If I don't have the person I love
And the sun sets in the sky
As the day comes to an end
You're the apple of my eye
You are the person I love the most
If the bomb goes off again
If there is another bombing attack
In my brain or on the train
Whether it occurs in my mind or on public transit
I hope that I'm with you
I want to be together with you in that moment
'Cause I wouldn't know what to do
Because I would be lost without you
If I haven't got you
If I don't have the person I love
It means nothing
Life has no significance without love
It means nothing
Nothing has any true significance
It means nothing
Nothing has any true significance
If I haven't got you
If I don't have the person I love
You, you
You, the person I love
Oh,
(It means nothing)
Nothing has any true significance
(It means nothing)
Nothing has any true significance
(It means nothing)
