Forbert signed a recording contract with Nemperor in 1978, and they released his debut album, Alive on Arrival, that same year. His song "Romeo's Tune", although "dedicated to the memory of Florence Ballard" on the sleeve of Forbert's second album Jackrabbit Slim (released in 1979), is not about Supremes singer Ballard who died in 1976. "Forbert admits that Ballard became a timely connection for "Romeo's Tune", written about a girl from Meridian. "That seemed like such bad news to me and such sad news. She wasn't really taken care of by the music business, which is not a new story". At around this time critics hailed Forbert as "The new Bob Dylan" because of a similar vocal timbre and thoughtful songwriting. The front cover of Jackrabbit Slim encourages such comparisons with its simplicity: a black and white photo of Steve Forbert playing a well-worn Martin acoustic guitar with a capo on it, his shirt tinted green. The record was recorded in Nashville and produced by John Simon who had worked with The Band.
After many successful years, Forbert sought out new inspiration and found it when he relocated to Nashville in 1985. Forbert's tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, Any Old Time, was nominated for a 2004 Grammy in the best traditional folk category. In 2006, he was inducted into the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame.
Recent albums include Strange Names & New Sensations (2007), The Place And The Time (2009), and Over With You (2012).

The Weekend
Steve Forbert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But just do your best; it's the best you can do
The sailboats are gliding to shore with the wind
Go out and stroll about and find a friend
Yeah, the long week is gone, now the weekend's begun
Go down and check the tavern; you might find some fun
The girls from the high ridge are singing tonight
Hang out and drink some wine and feel all right
Does your heart tell the truth when you're lying?
Number one
Does your blues get you high when you're crying?
Oh, oh, now
Yeah, the telephone's ringing, but nobody's home
She's out for the evening, but she's not out alone
Of course you could find her, but what'd be the use?
Hang out and drink some wine and just get juiced
Does your mind hit the groove when you're gleaming?
Number two
Does your life start to live while you're dreaming?
Oh, oh, now
The slow week is gone, now the weekend will run
Relax on a Sunday and soak up some sun
There ain't much of nothin' that's free anymore
But the sunshine's real fine and don't keep score
Do you think you could love one and only?
Number three
Does your blues get you off when you're lonely?
Oh, oh, now
The Weekend by Steve Forbert is a song that captures the feeling of the weekend approaching, and the hope and excitement that comes with it. The first verse speaks to the unpredictability of life, and the importance of doing your best despite things not always working out as you want them to. The second verse encourages listeners to embrace the weekend and seek out fun and friendship at local taverns, with the added bonus of live music from the girls of the high ridge. The chorus is introspective, asking important questions about the truth of one's heart and mind, and whether or not they find solace in the blues. The final verse speaks to the restorative power of relaxation and soaking up the sunshine, while questioning the concept of finding love and comfort in only one person.
Overall, The Weekend is a song about hope, connection, and the richness of life that comes with taking pleasure in the simple things. The lyrics encourage listeners to make the most of their weekends, to seek out adventure and fun with friends new and old, and to examine their own inner selves in search of truth and meaning.
