Cassandra
Steve Hackett Lyrics

Is there any reason why you know it goes so sad
Somewhere in time another premonition
Or is it a memory of what happened in the past
Cassandra, when you cry
Cassandra, ???
Cassandra, stay the night
Cassandra, tears so right
Haven't you seen by now what lies ahead
Nobody listens till it's too late to change it
Was it suspicion, no matter what you said
Cassandra, when you cry
Cassandra, ???
Cassandra, stay the night
Cassandra, tears so right
Cassandra, when you cry
Cassandra, oooh oooh oooh
Cassandra, wooaaah
Cassandra, cry cry cry
Cassandra, tears so right
Cassandra

Cassandra
The song "Cassandra" by Steve Hackett is questioning the ability of a woman named Cassandra to see into the future. The lyrics ask if there is a reason why she knows that the future will be sad. The song seems to suggest that Cassandra has had premonitions before and that maybe she is remembering something that has already occurred.
The chorus of the song focuses on the emotion that Cassandra expresses. She cries and her tears are depicted as "so right" and powerful. The verses continue to ask Cassandra when she will know if she can break the danger that she sees coming. There is a sense of frustration in the lyrics that nobody listens to Cassandra until it is too late to change the course of events.
The melody of the song matches the emotional urgency of the lyrics. The guitar work is complex and dynamic, and the chorus soars with Hackett's signature guitar tone. The song is a powerful meditation on the idea of foresight and the cost of not taking warnings seriously.
