(2) Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 – June 4, 2004), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent in free improvisation, but Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly structured. Lacy also became a highly distinctive composer, with compositions often built out of little more than a single questioning phrase, repeated several times.
After Lacy was diagnosed with cancer in August 2003, he continued playing and teaching until weeks before his death on June 4, 2004 at the age of 69.

You say I'm wrong, then show you're right
We kiss, we hug, we fuss and fight
We laugh, make up, then we go all night
It's such a thrill to love you and it's real
Roller coaster, of emotions we feel
It's such a thrill to love you and it's real
Sometimes I hate you
Sometimes you kill
My love but I still
Manage to deal
You think I'm crazy, I could say the same
Perfect for each other, yeah, we're both insane
No, I don't need your alibi
You say I'm wrong, then show you're right
We kiss, we hug, we fuss and fight
We laugh, make up, then we go all night
It's such a thrill to love you and it's real
Roller coaster, of emotions we feel
It's such a thrill to love you and it's real
Roller coaster, of emotions we feel
No, I don't need your alibi
These lyrics describe a tumultuous relationship, where the singer is fully aware of both the good and the bad aspects of being with their partner. They don't need an alibi or justification for their actions, because they know that their partner is not perfect, and they accept that. The two of them have their fair share of arguments, but they also make up and enjoy each other's company to the fullest, even if it means staying up all night. The singer acknowledges that loving their partner is a thrill, but it also comes with ups and downs, like a roller coaster ride.
The line, "Sometimes I hate you, Sometimes you kill my love" can be interpreted in different ways. On one hand, it could mean that the singer hates some of their partner's actions or personality traits, but still loves them overall. On the other hand, it could suggest that sometimes the partner's behavior or words hurt the singer deeply, but they still manage to cope with it and remain in the relationship. The recurring theme of "roller coaster of emotions" reinforces the idea that the relationship is unpredictable and intense, but ultimately worth it for the singer.
Overall, Steve Lacy's "4real" portrays a complex and honest portrayal of a relationship that isn't perfect, but is still cherished by both parties.
