(2) Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 โ June 4, 2004), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent in free improvisation, but Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly structured. Lacy also became a highly distinctive composer, with compositions often built out of little more than a single questioning phrase, repeated several times.
After Lacy was diagnosed with cancer in August 2003, he continued playing and teaching until weeks before his death on June 4, 2004 at the age of 69.

Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do, what to do, what to do
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
A foggy day, in London town
Had me low, had me down
I viewed the morning, with much alarm
British Museum, had lost its charm
How long I wondered,
Could this thing last
But the age of miracles, hadn't past
For suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London town,
The sun was shining everywhere
For suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London town,
The sun was shining everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere
Everywhere
The lyrics of "A Foggy Day" by Steve Lacy describe a moment of despair that turns into a moment of serendipity. The singer finds himself in a city that he is not familiar with, and all the people he knows are out of town. This leads him to feel sorry for himself and question what he should do. The outlook seems bleak, and he feels low and down. The British Museum, a place he previously enjoyed, has lost its charm. He wonders how long he will feel like this.
However, as he walks through the foggy streets, he sees someone he knows, and suddenly, everything changes. The sun shines everywhere, and the feeling of despair disappears. The lyrics suggest that even on the darkest days, there is always hope and that things can turn around unexpectedly. The song captures the idea that a moment of serendipity can make all the difference in how we view the world, and it serves as a reminder that we should always be open to new experiences and opportunities.
Overall, "A Foggy Day" is a song about the power of chance encounters to change our lives. The lyrics capture the sense of disorientation and loneliness that can come from being in a new place, but they also remind us that life is full of surprises, and that even the most challenging situations can lead to new opportunities.
