Love 2 Fast
Steve Lacy Lyrics

And it ain't cool
Got me thinking 'bout how things decay
And about you
Uh, but I'll be fine, I have to set delay
Before I try to fall in love, not pain
Yes, I'll be fine
I just can't rush, not again
Not again, no, not again, uh
Fuck, why is falling in love so hard?
I think I just move too quickly
Based on the patterns I've been studying on myself
I've done the most scientific research and I think
That I should just take things a little slower
You know, I've learned a lot in experience
You know, I'm grateful to be in this place right now, ayy
I swear there's something 'bout a loss there is to gain
Perhaps a lesson
If you do it once, don't do it again
Unless it's destined, oh
But you'll be fine, you have to set delay
Before you try to fall in love, not pain
Yes, you'll be fine
You just can't rush, not again
Not again, no, not again
In "Love 2 Fast," Steve Lacy sings about the difficulty of falling in love and the pain that can come with it. The opening lines set a melancholic tone, as he reflects on the feeling of something being off in the air, perhaps signaling an impending change or loss. He then addresses his tendency to move too quickly when it comes to relationships, acknowledging the patterns he has identified in his behavior and the need to take things slower in order to avoid repeating past mistakes.
The chorus is a self-assurance that he will be fine, as long as he avoids rushing into love again. He questions why falling in love is so difficult, and reflects on the lessons he has learned through experience. In the second verse, he offers the same advice to a hypothetical "you," describing the potential for growth through the pain of loss and the importance of taking time to heal before trying to love again.
Overall, "Love 2 Fast" is a thoughtful meditation on the complexities of love and the self-awareness required to navigate its ups and downs.

I swear there's something in the wind outside today
I feel a strong presence in the air today
And it ain't cool
And it's not a good feeling
Got me thinking 'bout how things decay
It makes me reflect on how things tend to wither away
And about you
And about someone special to me
Uh, but I'll be fine, I have to set delay
However, I will be okay, I need to take my time
Before I try to fall in love, not pain
Before I dive into a new relationship, I need to ensure it's pure and not toxic
Yes, I'll be fine
Yes, I will be okay
I just can't rush, not again
I just can't hurry into love once more
Not again, no, not again, uh
I won't make the same mistake again
Fuck, why is falling in love so hard?
Damn, why is love such a difficult journey?
I think I just move too quickly
Perhaps I tend to rush things
Based on the patterns I've been studying on myself
After observing my behavior and tendencies
I've done the most scientific research and I think
I've investigated thoroughly and reached a conclusion
That I should just take things a little slower
That it's best for me to slow things down
You know, I've learned a lot in experience
I've gained knowledge through personal encounters
You know, I'm grateful to be in this place right now, ayy
I'm thankful for my current state and position
I swear there's something 'bout a loss there is to gain
I believe there's value in what we can learn from our losses
Perhaps a lesson
Possibly a teaching
If you do it once, don't do it again
If something didn't work out the first time, don't repeat it
Unless it's destined, oh
Unless it's meant to be
But you'll be fine, you have to set delay
But you will be okay, you need to take your time
Before you try to fall in love, not pain
Before you enter a new romantic relationship, make sure it's healthy
Yes, you'll be fine
Yes, you will be okay
You just can't rush, not again
You just can't hurry into love once more
Not again, no, not again
You won't make the same mistake again

(2) Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 – June 4, 2004), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent in free improvisation, but Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly structured. Lacy also became a highly distinctive composer, with compositions often built out of little more than a single questioning phrase, repeated several times.
After Lacy was diagnosed with cancer in August 2003, he continued playing and teaching until weeks before his death on June 4, 2004 at the age of 69.
