(2) Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 – June 4, 2004), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career. He worked extensively in experimental jazz and to a lesser extent in free improvisation, but Lacy's music was typically melodic and tightly structured. Lacy also became a highly distinctive composer, with compositions often built out of little more than a single questioning phrase, repeated several times.
After Lacy was diagnosed with cancer in August 2003, he continued playing and teaching until weeks before his death on June 4, 2004 at the age of 69.

You are too wonderful to be what you seem!
Could there be eyes like yours,
Could there be lips like yours
Could there be smiles like yours,
Honest and truly?
You stepped out of a cloud
I want to take you away, away from the crowd
Alone and apart out of a dream,
Safe in my heart
You stepped out of a dream
You are too wonderful to be what you seem!
Could there be eyes like yours,
Could there be lips like yours
Could there be smiles like yours,
Honest and truly?
You stepped out of a cloud
I want to take you away, away from the crowd
And have you all to myself,
Alone and apart out of a dream,
Safe in my heart
The song 'You Stepped Out of a Dream' by Steve Lacy is a love song that expresses extreme admiration for someone special. The song begins by saying that the person has stepped out of a dream and is too wonderful to be true. The lyricist wonders if there exist eyes, lips, and smiles like that person's. The word 'dream' is not only used to suggest that the person is too good to be true but also to suggest that the person is dreamlike, and the experience of meeting them feels surreal. The lyricist then goes on to say that the desire is to take that person away from the crowd and to have them to themselves. They want to keep them safe in their heart.
The metaphor of stepping out of a dream is used as a device to suggest that the meeting with that person feels like something unreal, an event not expected, and the person is so perfect that they could be a fruit of imagination. The song also portrays the sense of awe that the lyricist feels for the person, and how they are taken aback by their beauty. The line "You are too wonderful to be what you seem!" seems to reinforce this idea that the person is too perfect to be true.
Overall, the song is a celebration of love and speaks to the experience of falling in love with someone who seems like the perfect dream. It is a beautiful testament to the power of love and the way it can make us feel.
