Frenesi
Steve Lawrence Eydie Gorme Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was Fiesta down in Mexico
And so I stopped a while to see the show
I knew that frenesi meant please love me
And I could say frenesi
A handsome caballero caught my eye
I stood enchanted as he wondered by
And never knowing that it came from me
I gently sighed frenesi
He stopped and raised his eyes to mine
My lips just pleaded to be kissed
His eyes were soft as candles shined
So how was I to resist?
And I without a heart to call my own
A greatest happiness I've never known
Because his kisses are for me alone
Who wouldn't say frenesi?
Long, long ago
I wondered down into Old Mexico
There, at a dance
I met my first real romance.
Moon was shining bright
And I could hear laughing voices in the night
Everyone was gay
It was the start of a holiday.
Quiero que vivas solo para mi
why que tu vayas por donde yo voy
Para que mi alma sea nomas de ti
Besame con frenesi
Hay en el beso que te di
Alma, vida why Corazon
Dime que sabes to sentir
Lo mismo que siento yo
And I without a heart to call my own
A greatest happiness I've never known

Because his kisses are for me alone
Who wouldn't say frenesi?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Steve Lawrence's "Frenesi" tell the story of a romantic encounter during a Fiesta in Mexico. The singer happened upon the celebration and was struck by the handsome caballero who caught their eye. The singer was smitten and knew that "frenesi" meant "please love me," and so they sighed "frenesi" in hopes of catching the caballero's attention. To their delight, he did notice them and they shared a passionate moment together. The singer expresses their joy at having found love and being the recipient of the caballero's affection.

The lyrics are simple but evocative of the romantic setting and the intense emotions of the encounter. The use of Spanish words and phrases adds to the atmosphere of the song, transporting listeners to a foreign land where love and passion are in the air. The song's melody is equally captivating, with a slow and sensual rhythm that perfectly complements the lyrics.

Timothy Hughes

Gorme did several versions of "Frenesi" and this one (the second of three) is the best.

I never tire of this lady's musical brilliance...something extra special there. My earliest exposure was probabaly the first version but it's hard to beat this one with the added magic of Don Costa....So sad to hear about Keely....another great loss. Thanks a bunch and have a nice holiday.

@Petemonster62 I wish we had more diverse FM stations in my area, as most around hear tend to play either country, rock, or the same oldies over and over gain. I do like many of the songs within those station formats, but their needs to be more with also including jazz, classical, big band and other genres as well, but now at least we have the web to fill the void!!...Happy New Years Day from Lloyd.
