Lukather made himself famous by being the most sought-after session guitarist in LA in the 70s and 80s. He would walk into a studio last minute and lay down perfect tracks the first time, in whatever style required.
Known to his friends as "Luke" he still records and tours with Toto (2005) and continues to be an in-demand studio player and producer.
Influenced by the blues-rock pioneers such as Hendrix, and Jimmy Page, jazz guitarists such as Larry Carlton, and funk/fusion virtuosos such as Al Di Meola, Lukather's style is unique. He is known for fast, melodic, yet bluesy lines. His vibrato is very pronounced and steady. In interviews, he explains how he thinks of the guitar in a 'chordal cluster' format, and not the typical linear 'scale format'.
In addition to the high level of ability Steve Lukather has developed over the years, he also has built one of the largest effects rack of any rock guitarist. His tone is very 'signature', with a smooth overdrive/distortion, deep stereo delay, and all sorts of various effects on tap.
New World
Steve Lukather Lyrics

In a dream where no one heard a single word I screamed
It was somewhere in the future
This is not the perfect world that I thought it would be
I wandered by the White House
All the weeds and broken bottles scattered everywhere
All the greed and bad intentions
Empty highways, flooded towns
Is it way too late to turn it all around?
Take your soul and throw it away
You won't need it in the new world
Where there's no one left to save
We gotta take our stand, it's judgement day
If we ignore the final warning
It's a new world
We gotta pay for our history
I woke up feeling shitty
Drank a half a pot of coffee just to clear my head
As I read the morning paper
I'm not feeling any safer after what I just read
Empty highways, flooded towns
Is it way too late to turn it all around?
Follow me now to higher ground
If we wait any longer then this world will tumble down
Those who were lost soon will be found
It's our destiny
Take your soul and throw it away
You won't need it in the new world
Where there's no one left to save
We gotta take our stand, it's judgement day
If we ignore the final warning
(If we ignore the final warning )
Steve Lukather's song "New World" contains lyrics expressing the singer's feeling of despair and disillusionment about the state of the world. The song starts with the lyrical depiction of a dream in which the singer wakes up on a sidewalk, screaming and finding himself in a future world where no one could hear him. The future world he finds himself in is not perfect as he had imagined, but it's filled with broken bottles and weeds, and greed and bad intentions abound. The singer is in shock and just stands and stares.
The song then moves to the present, where the singer had woken up feeling wrong and drank half a pot of coffee to clear his head. As he reads the morning paper, he feels less safe and less secure than before. The world is now plagued with empty highways, and towns are being flooded. The singer questions if it is too late to turn everything around. He then goes on to urge people to follow him to higher ground before the world tumbles down. The fate of those who are lost would soon be discovered, and it is our destiny to change our ways.
The song's lyrics speak to the impact that human actions have on the environment and how damaging they can be. It portrays a sense of hopelessness and despair, but also highlights the need for people to take a stand and make changes so that the world may be saved. The consequences of ignorance and inaction are dire, and the song serves as a warning to prompt people to take action.
