Steve Miller (born 5 October 1943) is a blues and rock and roll guitarist and performer. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but attended high school in Dallas. While at St. Mark's School of Texas, he formed his first band, The Marksmen. Miller taught one of his classmates, Royce Boz Scaggs, a few guitar chords so that he could join the band; Scaggs became better known by his nickname, Boz. Miller attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the 1960s, where he formed The Ardells. Scaggs joined the Ardells the next year. Ben Sidran was added to the Ardells as a keyboardist the following year.
In 1968, Miller formed the Steve Miller Band, with Scaggs handling vocals, and released an album, Children of the Future, the first in a series of discs rooted solidly in the psychedelic blues style that dominated the San Francisco music scene at the time. Scaggs would leave the band after a couple of albums with vocal chores taken over by drummer Tim Davis; Miller himself would begin singing occasional lead on 1969's Brave New World. These albums performed respectably on the album charts but failed to yield a hit.
In the 1970's the band had some hits that became classics over the years - Jet Airliner, with some evocative lyrics that brought home the loss of life on the road; and The Joker which includes the famous line about the "pompatus of love", which is of course nonsense, but that didn't stop a lot of stoned folks from spending years talking amongst themselves.
Steve Miller's father was a wealthy doctor in Dallas, and friends with famous guitarist and guitar designer Les Paul. Les Paul gave Miller his first guitar lessons.
Longtime member Norton Buffalo (harmonica player) died from lung cancer on October 30, 2009.
John King (drummer during "The Joker" era) died after a short bout of kidney cancer on October 26, 2010.
Band-member James Cooke died from cancer on 16 May 2011.

Cause I feel like rockin', baby, all night long
I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you look so good
If you feel like dancin', baby, I wish you would
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
We got to get together cause it's gonna be good
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
If you feel like dancin', baby, I wish you would
I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you dance so good
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
Come on and move it with me, honey
Come on and help me spend my money
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
A little bit of rockin' makes everything right
We're gonna rock it, baby
Rock it tonight
Come on and rock it with me, baby
Come on and shake it with me, baby
Come on and move it with me, baby
Come on and groove it with me, baby
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
If you feel like rockin', then baby come on
Baby, we can rock it all night long
The lyrics to Steve Miller Band's "Rock It" are simple and straightforward. The song is an invitation to dance and let loose. The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with Miller singing, "If you feel like rockin' now, baby, come on / Cause I feel like rockin', baby, all night long." He then goes on to express his admiration for a specific person at the party, singing "I got my eyes on you, baby, cause you look so good / If you feel like dancin', baby, I wish you would."
The chorus is the heart of the song, with Miller inviting everyone to join him in rocking and shaking it. Throughout the song, he emphasizes the importance of having fun and letting loose. Lyrics~
Well, I've been lookin' real hard
And I'm tryin' to find a job
But it just keeps gettin' tougher every day
But I got to do my part
'Cause I know in my heart
I got to please my sweet baby, yeah
Well, I ain't superstitious
And I don't get suspicious
But my woman is a friend of mine
And I know that it's true
That all the things that I do
Will come back to me in my sweet time
So keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California
Where the girls are warm
So I could be with my sweet baby, yeah
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Baby, baby, baby
Keep on rock'n
Rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n
Rock'n me, baby
Woo-hoo, yeah
Don't get suspicious
Now don't be suspicious
Babe, you know you are a friend of mine
And you know that it's true
That all the things that I do
Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time
I went from Phoenix, Arizona
All the way to Tacoma
Philadelphia, Atlanta, L.A.
Northern California
Where the girls are warm
So I could hear my sweet baby say
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, rockin' me, rockin'
Baby, baby, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby
Keep on rock'n me, baby

This is what us American kids grew up with in the 70's. No internet, no smartphones. Just an AM radio.

It's a shame really. In this advanced day and age, it's so easy to imagine the 70s as a boring decade.
