He is a pioneer of minimalism, although his music has increasingly deviated from a purely minimalist style. Reich's innovations include using tape loops to create phasing patterns (examples are his early compositions, "It's Gonna Rain" and "Come Out"), and the use of processes to create and explore musical concepts (for instance, "Pendulum Music" and ""Four Organs"). These compositions, marked by their use of repetitive figures and phasing effects, have significantly influenced contemporary music, especially that of his country.
The Guardian has described Reich as one of the few composers to have "altered the direction of musical history."
Reich often cites Pérotin, J.S. Bach, Debussy and Stravinsky as composers he admires, whose tradition he wished as a young composer to become part of. Jazz is a major part of the formation of Reich's musical style, and two of the earliest influences on his work were vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Alfred Deller, whose emphasis on the artistic capabilities of the voice alone with little vibrato or other alteration was an inspiration to his earliest works. John Coltrane's style, which Reich has described as "playing a lot of notes to very few harmonies", also had an impact; of particular interest was the album "Africa/Brass", which "was basically a half-an-hour in F." Reich's influence from jazz includes its roots, also, from the West African music he studied in his readings and visit to Ghana. Other important influences are Kenny Clarke and Miles Davis, and visual artist friends such as Sol Lewitt and Richard Serra.

Steve Reich won the Polar prize in 2007.

Steve Reich is one of the best composers ever.

This song is especially good because it can give you a completely different perspective to listen to all music to. I can feel the music in my body and mind, with scenes unfolding in my imagination. It's also amazing to hear contrasting pitches on the same note because of the nature of marimbas, which is not one of frustration with intonation most other instruments have. This piece, to me, just like "Music for 18" and "Octet" involve an experience where it feels like I'm communicating with a god.
Steve Reich is a genius.

This music is written on my soul

This is peace of the art. Marimba like instrument is not giving many chances to express some important parts of human soul. But when You are listening this, You are feeling Yourself not a human with flesh, but so easy, like a weather, like cloud. And this is just because of the Steve Reich - the perfect musicion and artist with big hart. Live 1000 years. I love You, like human, Steve REICH

@Joseph Kiesel In 3 years? Yeah, I sometimes drink. But only blacked-out once. Why do you ask?

@Eklektik40 geez bro let the non English speaking guy enjoy the music and express himself how he feels dawg have you been drinking ?

If you say so... but it's also your thinking. I don't know who told you Reich was a "musicion" with a big "hart". But that's pretty silly in itself. And funny. Enjoy your flesh and humanity. I gotta take a shit now.

Nach wie vor - eins der wunderbarsten Stücke von ihm. Eine "flotte" Version von Six Pianos dazu.
