Summer
Steven Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love me as the summer gone
When eyes are closed and days are long' so long
I burned a torch for you but all the while
Somewhere in the haze you lost your smile

Love me as the winter comes
Don't cast your shadow on my soul, please don't
Don't let me sink don't let the darkness in
Let your perfect fingers touch my skin

Heart needs a home
It's a dark and empty road
When you're alone
Heart needs a home
It's a dark and empty road
When you're alone

Love me as the springtime comes
Let your song drift down the stairs to me
Waiting here along the way to blue
Remembering the days I spent with you

Heart needs a home

It's a dark and empty road
When you're alone

Overall Meaning

The opening of this stanza refers to a love once known and lost, and the desire to rekindle it, possibly in a nostalgic sense. The singer compares the love they yearn for to the feeling of summer being a distant memory and the sense of growing melancholy that comes with the fall into winter. In the second verse, the singer implores the subject to not bring negativity or doubts into the potential reunion of their love, referring to them "casting a shadow" over their own soul.

The chorus speaks of the human heart and its innate need for connection and a sense of home. The 'dark and empty' road that the singer refers to highlights the loneliness that can be felt when yearning for something or someone that is not present. The further repetition of the line directs the focus to the idea of home, seeking reassurance that the love they are requesting will be that secure and comforting haven in a world of instability.

The final verse expresses the hope of spring and its attendant promise of new beginnings, emphasizing the singer's longing for a love that will last. 'Let your song drift down the stairs to me' reveals that the singer is still waiting for the subject to respond and hopeful that they will hear their plea. 'Waiting here along the way to blue' reinforces the idea that the subject is still sought out and longed for.

A girl with the romanest nose on the planet
Crinoline runs down her face
The embers of firelight arrange shadows
A black winter burned
By the summer gone

Down on it's luck
Now that we were born the leaves are all forever
Autumn strong
Candle blows out
Now she knows we gotta run to the shore

I drink in the spot I was wearily older
Sleeping to dreaming awake
The fish will still bite as the river gets colder
Rain drops against
As the sunlight fades

Lighting a match
Now that we were born the leaves are all forever
Autumn strong
The fisherman's catch
Now she knows we gotta run to the shore

A girl with the romanesque nose on the planet
Crinoline runs down her face
The embers of firelight arrange shadows
A black winter burned
By the summer gone

Down on it's luck
Now that we were born the leaves are all forever
Autumn strong
Candle blows out
Now she knows we gotta run to the shore
Light bleeds
Lighting a match
Now that we were born the leaves are all forever
Autumn strong
The fisherman's catch
Now she knows we gotta run to the shore

@Tintop

imo "hand cannot erase" was a pretty epheremal album for me. Has its moments... but it's not like I'm eager to give it another spin soon.. I think "Grace for Drowning" is his best solo album so far.
"a door marked summer" is a diamond... I'm instantly hooked.. reason may be that this sounds so familiar.

It's hard to "let him go" when you grew strong bonds with his Porcupine Tree work from the millenium (Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream) to Deadwing (Fear of a blank planet already wasn't something for me).

His solo stuff is really good from an outsider perspective, and maybe really good in a music reviewer perspective. But if you know what songs he wrote before, you just can be kinda disappointed.

I bought Hand cannot Erase and To the bone on vinyl (like always) and I don't regret it, it's good music, it completes my collection... but it's not something that's spinning very often on my record-player. But "to the bones" sounds better to me than "hand cannot erase". Also I'm kinda glad that Marco Minnemann was "booted" or whatever you gonna call it. While I generally liked his drumming in the whole context of "The Raven...", the same time I found his drumming style on "Hand cannot erase" too much intrusive and misplaced at times. He's an absolute talented and great drummer but far from being in my Top 10 drummers (but remember: I have no real clue about music, so just my personal opinion). Guthrie Govan on the other side was a big loss :-(

Another topic is Ninet Tayeb. She's a great singer and I really like her singing in her solo stuff. But I don't really know how she fits into Steven Wilsons songs. He says he "wrote Pariah for her voice" but tbh it's the worst song with her. It's not fitting at all (imo). Only the ending her voice caresses my ears. The other songs are ok. But I always had this weird feeling when she sung in one of his songs. Often seemed out of place.

I'm curious what he will bring us next... maybe we can expect something like "a door marked summer" next time? :-D would be nice to get a bit back to the "roots" (although his musical roots go way back to the early 90's)

@cwatson4271

Stunning tone at 5:26 when the guitar rushes in. Another gem from SW.

@jonathananderson2266

This Cat blows my mind. I love that his work is un-adulterated by commerce and sensationalism. 🙏🏻🤘🏻

@ElArlequin

Steven, if you are reading this YOU MUST PLAY THIS LIVE. God. when the guitar part breaks; at 05:26 it just makes me cry like a baby. This is SO good. I think it's one of the best songs Steven has done. And no, I am NOT a Porcupine Tree mega fan. I love PT but I enjoyed Steven Wilson's solo works more. GOD. I'll be right back; I'm going to listen to this song again.
