For those who are saying that Cat Stevens is underrated - he most certainly was NOT. He was a huge, huge success. Everyone knew he was special. I think it was because he gave up his music for his faith early on that the industry and people for a while forgot about him. But he was big back in the day. I have recently rediscovered him. Because he's a bit shy and awkward but awesomely talented, he may not get the attention he deserves (or attention for all the wrong reasons). This song was played on the radio while my old, beloved german shepard was literally sleeping away in my arms. A doctor was listening to his fading heartbeat and it was over peacefully all family members close to him....and Cat Stevens on the background tells how the first cut is the deepest. It was more than two years ago, I still cannot listen the intro without getting tears in my eyes immediately, almost wipes my feet off to hear the guitar.

In Cat Stevens' earlier music career he was not Muslim. But he quit the music business and let go of his lifestyle, and musical instruments. He became a devout Muslim for many years and started a family.
He has already explained that during the period when he supported the fatwa against Salman Rushdie, that he was fanatical to a degree which he does not agree with anymore.
And now obviously he is living a lifestyle that the most extreme conservative Muslims do not allow.

i knew a young kid back in 2007 who (at the time) couldn't have been older than 11 or 12 ... we at that time lived on the east side of Germany close to the Czech boarder...this lad was literally "obsessed" with Cat Stevens... all the kid could talk about whenever he was around was Cat's "Morning Has Broken"... it seemed kinda odd to me that he was literally overtaken by this song although i was really impressed by his appreciation and taste for this "old skool" music ...so much so that i gave him two of my Cat Steven CDs that i actually really treasured ... this kid was "over the moon" elated by this to say the least lol! ... i will never forget this ... this kid was before his time ...

Cat Stevens wrote the song, but he sold it to P. P. Arnold, and with regard to original vs. cover, the first one to be released counts as the original, regardless of who wrote it. His autobiography is fascinating.. he was a big UK pop sensation then got tuberculosis and almost died, then reemerged his career and then almost drowned and left his career for his Islamic religion but at one time his concerts at Madison square garden mesmerized thousands including me.

He was one of Britain's finest singer songwriters and was never underrated. North America produced most of the best singer songwriters and Cat Stevens has always been lauded as one of the greats. Britain had the best bands though by a long mile.

I met him in person few years ago, and man oh man the guy's face was radiating with peace and humbleness. I was getting butterflies in my stomach speaking with him but he just kept replying with a smile and thanking me for the love i have for his music.

Had this on an obscure 45 (got it from the local DJ in a box of discarded 45's he never played) and fell in love with Cat Stevens and his music. Had his LPs and played the grooves off of Buddha and the Chocolate Box. Man, life and music was so much better then.

I remember hearing a story about Cat Stevens from the late 60's , having released a couple of albums , and doing very well , he went into either a Rolls Royce / Bentley show room , and was looking at the Silver Shadows or Continental's or whatever , the sales manager walks over , treats Cat Stevens with arrogant contempt , saying save your pennies son or something like it , Cat Stevens replies , no , I think I'll pay now , will cash be OK ?
