After starting her career as a duo with her then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, releasing the album Buckingham Nicks to little success, Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, helping the band to become one of the best-selling music acts of all time with over 120 million records sold worldwide. Rumours, the band's second album with Nicks, became one of the best-selling albums worldwide, being certified 20× platinum in the US.[2]
In 1981, while remaining a member of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks began her solo career, releasing the studio album Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard 200 and has reached multiplatinum status.[3] She has released eight studio solo albums and seven studio albums with Fleetwood Mac, selling a certified total of 65 million copies in the US alone.[2]
After the release of her first solo album, Rolling Stone named her the "Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll".[4] Nicks was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time[5] and one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time[6] by Rolling Stone. Her Fleetwood Mac songs "Landslide", "Rhiannon", and "Dreams", with the last being the band's only number one hit in the US, together with her solo hit "Edge of Seventeen", have all been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[7] She is the first woman to have been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: first as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and then as a solo artist in 2019.[8]
Nicks has garnered eight Grammy Award[9] nominations and two American Music Award nominations as a solo artist. She has won numerous awards with Fleetwood Mac, including a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978 for Rumours.
The albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Bella Donna have been included in the "Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Albums" chart by Billboard.[10] Furthermore, Rumours was rated the seventh-greatest album of all time in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time",[11] as well as the fourth-greatest album by female acts.[12]
For What It's Worth
Stevie Nicks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I got to be a part of a great romance
Still forbidden, still outrageous
Only a few around us knew
But no one said a word
It was contagious
Looked out the windows
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was
You saved my life
I won't forget it
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff, loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
Came through your door
For what it's worth
I got to love, I rode the rails
You came with me because you cared
I was broken, I was scared
You held my hands and took away my fear
We knew it couldn't last
And that was hard
We looked out the windows
We watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was
You saved my life
I won't forget it
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff, loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
And came through your door
For what it's worth
I got to sing, I got to dance
I got to be a part of a great romance
Still forbidden, still outrageous
Only a few around us knew
But no one said a word
It was contagious
We looked out the windows
We watched the cars fly by
I look at you and I start to cry
What you did was
Well, you saved my life
I won't forget it
You said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff, loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
And came through your door
Ooh, you said even if I left my girlfriend
Packed up my stuff and loaded up my car
Drove down to your house with good intentions
And came through your door
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
For what it's worth
The song "For What It's Worth" by Stevie Nicks is a powerful reflection on a tumultuous and forbidden love affair. The lyrics describe the intense emotions and experiences of the singer, including the joys and hardships of being part of a relationship that is kept hidden from the world. The first verse highlights the excitement of the affair, with Nicks singing about how she got to sing, dance, and be part of a "great romance." Despite the fact that the relationship was "forbidden" and "outrageous," only a few people knew about it, and even they remained silent.
In the second verse, Nicks reflects on the highs and lows of the affair. She sings about how her partner saved her life and helped her through a difficult time, but also acknowledges the inherent instability of their situation. The lyrics "We knew we couldn't last / And that was hard" capture the sense of fleeting happiness that often comes with illicit relationships. Despite this, Nicks still emphasizes the deep gratitude she feels for her partner's support and love.
The chorus of the song is a repetition of the lyrics "You said even if I left my girlfriend / Packed up my stuff / Loaded up my car / Drove down to your house / With good intentions came through your door / For what it's worth." These words convey a sense of regret and longing, as Nicks reflects on what might have been if the couple had had the courage to leave their respective partners and start a new life together. The phrase "for what it's worth" also suggests a degree of resignation or acceptance, as if Nicks understands that their relationship was never meant to last.
Overall, "For What It's Worth" is a haunting and evocative song that captures the complexities of human relationships. Through her lyrics, Stevie Nicks is able to convey the intense emotions and experiences of love, longing, and loss, creating a poignant tribute to the power of human connection.
