After starting her career as a duo with her then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, releasing the album Buckingham Nicks to little success, Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, helping the band to become one of the best-selling music acts of all time with over 120 million records sold worldwide. Rumours, the band's second album with Nicks, became one of the best-selling albums worldwide, being certified 20× platinum in the US.[2]
In 1981, while remaining a member of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks began her solo career, releasing the studio album Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard 200 and has reached multiplatinum status.[3] She has released eight studio solo albums and seven studio albums with Fleetwood Mac, selling a certified total of 65 million copies in the US alone.[2]
After the release of her first solo album, Rolling Stone named her the "Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll".[4] Nicks was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time[5] and one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time[6] by Rolling Stone. Her Fleetwood Mac songs "Landslide", "Rhiannon", and "Dreams", with the last being the band's only number one hit in the US, together with her solo hit "Edge of Seventeen", have all been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[7] She is the first woman to have been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: first as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and then as a solo artist in 2019.[8]
Nicks has garnered eight Grammy Award[9] nominations and two American Music Award nominations as a solo artist. She has won numerous awards with Fleetwood Mac, including a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978 for Rumours.
The albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Bella Donna have been included in the "Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Albums" chart by Billboard.[10] Furthermore, Rumours was rated the seventh-greatest album of all time in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time",[11] as well as the fourth-greatest album by female acts.[12]
Sometimes It's a Bitch
Stevie Nicks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I cried a river of tears from the pain
I try to dance with what life has to hand me
My partner's bring pleasure...my partner's bring pain
There are days when I swear I could fly like an eagle
And dark desperate hours that nobody sees
My arms stretched triumphant on top of the mountain
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind...and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses...and, sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
I've reached in darkness and come out with treasure
I've laid down with love and I woke up with lies
What's it all worth only the heart can measure
It's not what's in the mirror...but what's left inside
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind...and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses...and, sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
You gotta take it as it comes
Sometimes it don't come easy
I've run through rainbows and castles of candy
And I've cried a river of tears from the pain
I tried to dance with what life had to hand me
And if I could...I'd do it all over again
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes love's blind...and sometimes it sees
Sometimes it's roses...and, sometimes it's weeds
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze
Sometimes the picture just ain't what it seems
You get what you want...but it's not what you need
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes...it's a breeze
Well it's a breeze...it's a breeze...it's a breeze...
The lyrics to Stevie Nicks's song Sometimes It's a Bitch are about the ups and downs of life, love, and relationships. In the first verse, Nicks talks about how she has experienced both joy and pain in her life. She compares her experiences to rainbows and castles of candy, as well as a river of tears. She acknowledges that life can bring both pleasure and pain, and that she tries to dance with whatever comes her way. Additionally, Nicks describes the contrast between feeling like she could "fly like an eagle" one day, and then feeling "dark desperate hours" that nobody sees. She ends the verse with the imagery of her arms stretched triumphant on top of a mountain, and her head in her hands down on her knees, showing the contrast between triumph and despair in her life.
The chorus repeats throughout the song as Nicks acknowledges that sometimes life is easy and sometimes it's hard. She notes that sometimes love is blind and sometimes it sees, and sometimes things are beautiful like roses, and other times they are painful like weeds. At its core, the song is about taking life as it comes, both the good and the bad, and learning from the experiences that come our way. The song ends with Nicks expressing her willingness to live her life again, even if it means experiencing the pain and heartbreak she has already been through.
Overall, Sometimes It's a Bitch is a relatable and honest song about the realities of life, love, and relationships. Nicks uses vivid imagery to convey the emotions she is feeling, and through the song's chorus, she reminds listeners to take life as it comes, recognizing that sometimes it will be a breeze and other times it will be a challenge.
