After starting her career as a duo with her then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, releasing the album Buckingham Nicks to little success, Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975, helping the band to become one of the best-selling music acts of all time with over 120 million records sold worldwide. Rumours, the band's second album with Nicks, became one of the best-selling albums worldwide, being certified 20× platinum in the US.[2]
In 1981, while remaining a member of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks began her solo career, releasing the studio album Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard 200 and has reached multiplatinum status.[3] She has released eight studio solo albums and seven studio albums with Fleetwood Mac, selling a certified total of 65 million copies in the US alone.[2]
After the release of her first solo album, Rolling Stone named her the "Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll".[4] Nicks was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time[5] and one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time[6] by Rolling Stone. Her Fleetwood Mac songs "Landslide", "Rhiannon", and "Dreams", with the last being the band's only number one hit in the US, together with her solo hit "Edge of Seventeen", have all been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.[7] She is the first woman to have been inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: first as a member of Fleetwood Mac in 1998 and then as a solo artist in 2019.[8]
Nicks has garnered eight Grammy Award[9] nominations and two American Music Award nominations as a solo artist. She has won numerous awards with Fleetwood Mac, including a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978 for Rumours.
The albums Fleetwood Mac, Rumours, and Bella Donna have been included in the "Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Albums" chart by Billboard.[10] Furthermore, Rumours was rated the seventh-greatest album of all time in Rolling Stone's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time",[11] as well as the fourth-greatest album by female acts.[12]
You Can't Fix This
Stevie Nicks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It goes back so many years
All the times we almost didn't make it
We stayed clear
Dancing with the devil
Call it respect, call it fear
But we never allowed the devil
To come to the party
We walk through the darkness
We made a pact not to dance with the devil
Even when the devil seemed to have a heart
He said we'd never be sorry
For what we'd done
And we never allowed the devil
To come to the party
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking, right and left
Friendships break like glass
And the devil pours another glass
It's so easy
The devil pours a glass of Champagne
Asks someone new to dance
It's so easy to ruin people's lives
He twirls around and starts to laugh
Tear up the invitation
Hear the bells ring on the hour
He twirls around and he laughs
He said we'd never be sorry
For what we'd done
And we never allowed the devil
To come to the party
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Hearts breaking, right and left
Friendships break like glass
And the devil pours another glass
No, we never allowed the devil
To come to the party
Yes, we said that we would never be sorry
For what we'd done
Never go to the party
If you think you won't come home
Never dance with the devil
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
He will burn you down
Hearts breaking, right and left
Well, never dance with the devil
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
He will burn you down
Hearts breaking, right and left
Never dance with the devil
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
He will burn you down
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
Don't ever dance with the devil
You can't fix this, you lost a friend
He will burn you down
You can't fix this
You can't fix this
You can't fix this
You can't fix this
You can't fix this
The song "You Can't Fix This" by Stevie Nicks, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, and Rami Jaffee is a powerful message about the dangers of dancing with the devil. The lyrics depict the various times the singer and their friends almost succumbed to the influence of the devil but managed to stay strong and refuse his invitations. The devil is portrayed as a force that ruins friendships, breaks hearts, and destroys lives, and the singer warns against ever dancing with him. The title of the song serves as a reminder that some things cannot be fixed once they are broken.
The song is also a reflection on the past and the mistakes that may have been made, but ultimately, the singer finds solace in the fact that they never allowed the devil to take over their lives completely. The line "we made a pact not to dance with the devil" reveals the strength of the singer's determination to stay clear of temptation and to protect themselves and their friends from harm. The repetition of "you can't fix this" emphasizes the finality of the situation and the impossibility of repairing what has been broken.
Overall, the song serves as a cautionary tale about the many forms of temptation that can arise in life and the importance of staying strong in the face of adversity. It urges listeners to avoid the pitfalls of temptation and to instead focus on building strong relationships and living a fulfilling life.
