Little Wing
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running wild
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and a fairy tale
That's all she ever thinks about
Riding the wind

When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free
It's alright she says...it's alright
Take anything you want from me
Anything

Fly on little wing

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Fly on little wing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics for Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Little Wing" describe a woman who is in a world all her own. The singer describes her as walking through the clouds with a mind that's running wild with visions of butterflies, zebras, moonbeams, and fairy tales. The woman is constantly thinking about riding the wind and escaping reality.

In times of sadness, the woman comes to the singer with a thousand smiles, offering to give him anything he wants to make him feel better. The singer urges the woman to continue to fly on her "little wing" and pursue her dreams, even if they take her to places that are beyond the grasp of others. The song conveys a sense of wonder and enchantment with the world, an almost childlike sense of innocence and imagination that is hard to find in a world that is so often dominated by cold logic and reason.

+Ethan Morris There are stories where Gil Evans, who produced and arranged a lot of Miles Davis' classic stuff, as going to record an album with Hendrix. Imagine an an electric jazz band fronted by Jimi.

Sadly, Jimi died two weeks before the scheduled sessions.

In 1975, Gil Evans arranged Hendrix's songs for a 19 piece electric jazz orchestra. One of the players was David Sanborn.

"The Gil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music of Jimi Hendrix." One of the most interesting albums I have heard.

Evans also arranged a cover of "Little Wing" done by Sting.

My old man would always have this playing in his garage while we worked on classic cars. Makes me tear up every time I hear it, miss you, Dad.

My Dad was a body mechanic, he passed in 2001. But; i get where you are coming from, emotion. I hear Annie Lennox's " Angel " and am in a puddle of tears. My only Sister died years ago and her daughter and I were in the room holding her hands as she went. So, I get that songs make you feel.
