Stop
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Lonnie Mack Lyrics

Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Didn't hear my Daddy's voice, and I almost end up dead

Take ol' Glannon Road, you don't have to go that way
Take ol' Glannon Road, you don't have to go that way
Didn't hear my Daddy's voice, and that's where I went astray
Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Didn't hear my Daddy's voice, and I almost end up dead

Go right straight to school, son, don't be labeled as a fool
Go right straight to school, son, don't be labeled as a fool
But fall in the crowd, that meant one dip in the pool

Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Didn't hear my Daddy's voice, and I almost end up dead

Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said

Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said
Didn't hear my Daddy's voice, and I almost end up dead

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Stevie Ray Vaughan's song "Don't Stop by the Creek Son" tell a cautionary tale of a father's advice to his son, warning him against danger and foolishness. The repetition of the refrain "Don't stop by the creek, son, that's what my Daddy said" emphasizes the importance and urgency of the father's message. The first two stanzas focus on a specific incident where the son disregards his father's warning not to stop by the creek and almost dies as a result. The third stanza broadens the message to warn against being labeled a fool and instead encourages the son to focus on his education. However, the last two stanzas repeat the same cautionary refrain, indicating that the son still hasn't fully learned his lesson and is still at risk of danger.

The song addresses the themes of parental guidance, the consequences of disobedience, and the struggles of growing up and finding one's place in the world. It also suggests a larger societal context, where the son is at risk of falling into trouble and becoming another statistic. Overall, "Don't Stop by the Creek Son" is a powerful reminder of the importance of listening to the advice of those who care for us and recognizing the potential risks around us.

Indeed, I love gems like these. I'm 19, and even though I wasn't alive to see any of these guys perform, these videos always make me feel like I was there.
