Sticky Fingers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel it running in my veins
Struggling with breathing, suffocates my brain
There's no air in gravity's erase
I am the runaway dog, they sent me into space

It's a little planet flying through the stars
I don't wanna sit down, how much did I cost?
Light speed, but I'm feeling kind of slow
Gazing out the space screen, memories below

Master, why'd you have to leave me?
Didn't have to deceive me, we were friends
Slingshot, hurts that I'm not dreaming
Slowly overheating, you shook my hand

Silence, a neon glow lights up
A crackle of a speaker then everything goes dark
And there's nothing except this floating dream
I'm flying by the moon now, I think it's time to sleep
I think it's time to sleep

Master, why'd you have to leave me?
Didn't have to deceive me, we were friends
Slingshot, hurts that I'm not dreaming
Slowly overheating, you shook my hand
And I'm lonely, taking in the moonlight
It's not time for space flight for this dog
Was it worth it? Worth it breaking trust?
Worth the weight of love we have now lost?

We were friends
We were friends

Overall Meaning

In "Laika," Sticky Fingers explores the metaphorical interpretation of a dog's fate to highlight the dehumanizing experience of being used as a tool for someone's benefit. The song talks about a dog sent on a space mission who is struggling to cope with the consequences of his situation. The singer of the song considers himself as the runaway dog, representing individuals who are commissioned for a specific purpose under planet earth's oppressive regime. The first verse talks of feeling a sense of suffocation due to the expectations of those in power, who have forgotten that the dog, and by extension, humans, need to breathe to survive.

In the second verse, the song highlights the singer's sense of detachment from the world he has left behind, traveling in a little planet flying through the stars. The singer questions his purpose and the cost of his journey, and despite the light speed of his journey, he feels a sense of isolation and loneliness. His only connection to the world is the memories locked in his mind scrolling out on the space screen. The irony of his situation is also evident in his relationship with his master, who commissions him for this space mission. The master deceives the dog, raising the question of the worth of the trust and love they had before.

The chorus reiterates the sense of loneliness, the pain of the betrayal, and the regret of the singer of following his master's orders. The song's final line, "We were friends," reminds us that humans are social beings who crave connection and belonging, and being used as an instrument of power can fracture those connections beyond repair.

The lyrics
"Was it worth it? Worth it breaking trust?
Worth the weight of love
We have now lost?"

really hits hard when you read what one of the scientists who was responsible for sending Liaka said

"Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I'm sorry about it. We shouldn't have done it ... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog"

It really wasn't worth it at all, it was not worth it to send a poor dog to their death.

I feel it,
Running in my vein,
Struggling with breathing
Suffocates my brain.
And there's no air in

I don't want to sit down,
How much did I cost?
Light speed, but I'm feeling kinda slow.
Gazing out the space screen,

Didn't have to deceive me,
We were friends.
Slingshot, hurts that I'm not dreaming
Slowly overheating,
You shook my head.
Silence, a neon glow lights up.
A crackle of speaker,
The everything goes dark
And there's nothing,
Except this floating dream.
I'm flying by the moon now,
I think it's time to sleep,
I think it's time to sle-ee-ee-eep.
Master, why'd you have to leave me?
Didn't have to deceive me,
We were friends.
Slingshot, hurts that I'm not dreaming
Slowly overheating,
You shook my head.
And I'm lonely, taking in the moonlight.

[Outro]

Laika is in the Sky. She is a star. A Hero

@sskhussaini

The light you recieve from stars is millions of years old, so there's a chance that the star's already dead.
Sorry, I just had to do it. I'm also a dog person.

Laika was a stray dog rescued by the russians. What's worse is that before being sent to space after the (torture) training, one of the scientists took her to his home and played with her and his children. She felt what love was like before being abandoned in space.
