I Wish
Stig Rossen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Looking back on when I
Was a little nappy headed boy
Then my only worry
Was for Christmas what would be my toy
Even though we sometimes
Would not get a thing
We were happy with the
Joy the day would bring
Sneaking out the back door
To hang out with those hoodlum friends of mine
Greeted at the back door
With "Boy thought I told you not to go outside"
Trying your best to bring the water to your eyes
Thinking it might stop her from whooping your behind

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ever have to go
I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ever have to go
'Cause I love them so

Brother says he's telling
About you playing doctor with that girl
Just don't tell I'll give you
Anything you want in this whole wide world
Mama gives you money for Sunday school
You trade yours for candy after church is through
Smoking cigarettes and writing something nasty on the wall ("You nasty boy.")
Teacher sends you to the principal's office down the hall
You grow up and learn that kind of thing isn't right
But while you were doing it-it sure felt out to sight

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ever have to go

I wish those days could come back once more
Why did those days ever have to go

Overall Meaning

The song “I Wish” by Stig Rossen is a nostalgic and reflective piece about the innocence of youth and the memories of childhood that oftentimes stay with us forever. The first verse of the song talks about the singer's childhood and how his only concern was thinking about what toy he would receive for Christmas. Despite coming from a less privileged background and not always receiving presents, the child found joy in simply experiencing the day with family and friends. The chorus of the song expresses a lamentation over why those happy days ever had to come to an end, and a wish to turn back time to relive them.

The second verse talks about the mischievous nature of childhood and how the singer used to sneak out of the back door to hang out with "hoodlum friends". He then describes a scenario where 'brother' finds out about his friend playing doctor with a girl, and offers him anything in the world to keep it a secret. The verse also mentions receiving money from his mother for Sunday school but then trading it for candy and smoking cigarettes, further highlighting the carefree and wild nature of childhood. The final two lines of the verse acknowledge the growth that occurs as one becomes an adult and realizes that these behaviors aren't acceptable, but also acknowledges the nostalgic pull of those innocent times.

Overall, “I Wish” is a sentimental and poignant song that reminds us of the simple pleasures and freedoms of youth and how quickly time seems to fly by.
