I Wonder Why
Stigers Curtis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is a hunger
That burns in my soul
But you never notice the pain
Love is an anchor
That won't let me go
I reach out to hold you
But you push me away
You always convince me to stay

And I wonder why
We hold on with tears in our eyes
And I wonder why
We have to break down to just make
Things right
And I wonder why
I can't seem to tell you goodbye
Yeah, I wonder why

I'm no angel
With my selfish pride
But I love you more every day
Love is an anger
That builds up inside
As the tears of frustration
Roll down my face
Why does love always have to turn
Out this way

I don't want to fight again tonight
About the little things please baby
I just want to find my way

Back to love
And I'll meet you there, baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Curtis Stigers' song, "I Wonder Why," express the pain, frustration, and confusion that come from being in an unfulfilling, tumultuous relationship. The opening lines, "Love is a hunger that burns in my soul, but you never notice the pain," convey the idea that although the singer is deeply in love with their partner, that affection is not being reciprocated, leading to a lot of emotional strain. The line "Love is an anchor that won't let me go, I reach out to hold you, but you push me away" further underscores this point, suggesting that the singer is desperate to hold onto their partner, but that person is actively resisting them. The verse ends with the sentiment, "You always convince me to stay," indicating that there is a cycle of back-and-forth in this relationship, with the partner sometimes pulling the singer in and sometimes pushing them away.

The chorus, "And I wonder why we hold on with tears in our eyes, and I wonder why we have to break down to just make things right, and I wonder why I can't seem to tell you goodbye," sums up the entire theme of the song well. The lyrics express a sense of dissatisfaction about the way the relationship is going, and the singer is wondering why they keep putting up with it, despite the pain it causes. The line "We have to break down to just make things right" suggests that there may be moments of reconciliation or forgiveness that come after particularly bad fights or arguments. Still, the singer seems to know deep down that this is not a healthy way to keep a relationship going.

In the second verse, the singer admits that they too have their flaws and that their "selfish pride" is something they struggle with. However, they emphasize that their love for their partner never wavers, even as the anger they feel builds up inside. The line "As the tears of frustration roll down my face, why does love always have to turn out this way" perfectly captures the sense of hopelessness and exhaustion that comes from being stuck in a bad relationship. The closing lines of the song, "I just want to find my way back to love, and I'll meet you there, baby," suggest that despite everything, there is still a desire to make the relationship work, and that maybe, just maybe, there is a way out of this cycle of pain and hurt.

The 90s was THE era of the power ballad...and great sax solos....and great vocalists like this! What a great decade for music of all genres! I know nostalgia can play tricks on you and make you think things were better in hindsight than they really were but, man, I miss those times! For the music and entertainment at least..

My parents have been "apart" for almost 20 years and they both will still cry when this song is put on. Coming from a divorce home, it's nice to still see love.
