Hole Like The Sky
Still Life Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She is gone
Inside a hole like the sky,
Where I once was.
Now just everything
I never told her
And could not show her.

Thoughts had no weight,
Broken words sent her away.
I'm kicking for floor,
There's only distance to fall.
Reaching for the walls,
There's only distance to fall.

She is gone
And I am going.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Still Life's song Hole Like The Sky seem to capture the essence of heartbreak and regret. The singer is lamenting the fact that his lover has left him and he is left with a void that is as infinite and unreachable as the sky. He compares his emotions to an empty space, a void, where he was once whole with her but now that she's gone, there is only emptiness. He is unable to express his true feelings to her and has lost her due to his inability to communicate his love.

The next two lines further establish his regret and inability to convey his feelings. "Now just everything I never told her, And could not show her." He comes to realize that he had never properly expressed his love to her and now it's too late. He was not able to show her his true emotions and now that she's gone, he's left with only his thoughts and regrets. The lines "Thoughts had no weight, Broken words sent her away," are particularly poignant, as they beautifully capture the way in which their relationship fell apart.

The final two lines are perhaps the most intense and emotional of the entire song. "She is gone, And I am going." They seem to indicate a sense of finality, of the singer accepting that he has truly lost her and that he is now slipping away as well. It is a sad, but beautiful portrayal of love lost, and the pain that comes with it.
