They changed their name to Stimela after a life-changing experience in Mozambique when they were stranded in Maputo for three months. They had to sell all their belongings to take a train home. This trip was a watershed moment as it was where they conceived the new name for the band: train is translated as Stimela in Nguni languages.
Besides the change in name, the band also expanded with new members Charlie "Sam" Ndlovu, Nana Coyote, Thapelo Kgomo and Ntokozo Zungu. With soulful tunes and gripping lyrics, the band has recorded platinum-winning albums such as Fire, Passion and Ecstasy, Listen, Look and Decide as well as the controversial People Don't Talk, So Let's Talk. One of their most memorable tracks - "Whispers in the Deep" - was restricted for broadcast by the old South African Broadcasting Corporation.

This is tasty food for rats and files
Call me angry, callβ meβ mad
Soul whispers inβ the deep
The echo, all throughout theβ land
Reaches out to find, to find a hand
But finds an amputated stomp
That tells the story of the lonely
I'm inspired, I cannot understand hate
Iβm inspired, I cannot understand hate
I'm inspired, I cannot understand hate
I'm inspired, I cannot understand hate
Who songs are as truthful?
As I dream flows as steady as a stream
A stream of knowledge and of pain
Of one whose stance begin to wane
Allow the sleeping to retire
Because their love blows out the fire
I can see you pointed finger

We are all tributaries of that great river of pain
We are all tributaries of that great river of pain
We are all tributaries of that great river of pain
We are all tributaries of that great river of pain
Flowing into one ocean
There is only one ocean
All our pain flowing into it
But it did spill over, spill over the wonders of love
Into one nation of love
Before we recognise that all the oceans
All the oceans are one

In Stimela's song Whispers in the Deep, the lyrics delve into the painful reality of life, especially in the South African apartheid era. The song begins with a description of a sleeping individual, with sleep in their eyes, a scene that is an analogy of people who are ignorant of the realities of their surroundings. The next verse talks about the pain and suffering that exists in society and how it is an unending echo that reverberates throughout the land. This pain is accompanied by loneliness, symbolized by the amputated stomp. The stomp signifies an absence of a means to connect with others, to communicate, and to seek solace, which results in loneliness.
The song then goes on to talk about the power of love, the beauty of dreams, and the courage it takes to speak out. The artists express that they are inspired and cannot fathom hate, and encourages others to speak out their minds, to stand up and not be afraid to acknowledge the truth. The lyrics challenge the listener to recognize that we are all tributaries of the great river of pain and to embrace the power of love that can create one nation of love and unity.
