Big Lie Small World
Sting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sat down and wrote this letter
Telling you that I felt better
Since you'd gone and I was free
I'm so happy
I have so little time to spare now
I'm wanted almost everywhere now
I make out like Casanova
Friends are always coming over
Signed my name as if I meant it
Sealed it with a kiss and sent it
The letter had improved my mood
Happy in my solitude
But halfway home I changed my tune
And when I saw my lonely room
The mirror caught my eye
When I sit down I cry
Big lie small world
Big lie small world
I had to intercept that letter
Telling you that I was better
I raced to catch the postman's van
He was leaving as I ran
I miss the bus I miss the train
I end up walking in the rain
Big dog chased me down the street
I hadn't had a bite to eat
Feeling sorry for myself
Wishing I was someone else
I walked across the city
'Cause I couldn't stand your pity
Big lie small world
Big lie small world
The place you live looks opulent
And obviously a higher rent
Than our cozy little room
I had this sense of doom
The landlord says you're out of town
That your new boyfriend's always around
The hour was getting late
So I sit down and wait
Here's the postman with my letter
Coming down the path, he'd better
Give that thing to me
I have to make him see
Begging doesn't do the trick
He thinks that I'm a lunatic
And then who comes upon the scene
But your new boyfriend Mr. Clean
I hit the postman, hit your lover
Grabbed the letter ran for cover
The police arrived in time for tea
Said they'd like to question me
I can only curse my fate
I have to face the magistrate
It hasn't been the best of days
I'd like to fly away

Overall Meaning

In Sting's song "Big Lie Small World", the singer is a man who has just ended a relationship and wants to assure his ex-lover that he's doing well. He writes a letter to her, telling her how happy he is without her, but on his way home from the mailbox, the reality hits him hard. His lonely room looms in front of him, and he realizes he's not happy at all. The lyrics convey the theme that one's isolation can make things seem desirable, but in reality, that's not so. The lyrics also express a sense of self-realization, as the singer acknowledges his flaws and faults, but accepts them and seeks to grow from them.

Throughout the song, there's a sense of absurdity and exaggeration. The singer hypes up his social life to sound desirable in the letter, but he ends up getting chased by a dog and has no one but himself. When he's trying to retrieve the letter, all he wants to do is get it back from the postman, but ends up getting into a fight with his ex-lover's new boyfriend. While the lyrics paint a sad picture of a man who's lost and alone, there's also humor and satire woven into them.

on gabriels_message

Sting's song "Gabriel's Message" is a rendition of the biblical story of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel visits Mary to inform her that she is to be the mother of Jesus Christ. The lyrics describe Gabriel's appearance as he descends from heaven with his wings as white as snow and eyes as bright as flames. Upon seeing Mary, Gabriel greets her with the words "All hail, thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favored lady," referring to her as a blessed mother and foretelling that her son will be Emmanuel, as prophesized by seers.

Mary's response to Gabriel's message is one of humility and acceptance, as she meekly bows her head and says, "To me be as it pleaseth God," praising and magnifying His holy name. The lyrics are a beautiful interpretation of this pivotal moment in Christian history, showcasing the wonder and awe of Gabriel's visitation, and the steadfast faith and acceptance of Mary's response.
