Fine Knacks For Ladies
Sting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Good pennyworths but money cannot move,
I keep a fair but for the fair to view,
A beggar may be liberal of love.
Though all my wares be trash, the heart is true.
Great gifts are guiles and look for gifts again,
My trifles come as treasures from my mind,
Sometimes in shell the Orient's pearls we find.
Of others take a sheaf, of me a grain.
Within this pack pins, points, laces and gloves,
And divers toys fitting a country fair,
But in my heart, where duty serves and loves,
Turtles and twins, Court's brood, a heav'nly pair.
Happy the man that thinks of no removes.
In Sting's song "Fine Knacks for Ladies," the singer is selling inexpensive items, but the catch is that he is offering his heart along with these goods. He says that his merchandise may be worthless, but his feelings are honest. He is aware that people sometimes give great gifts in order to receive presents in return, and that true value is sometimes hidden in something that appears simple or unassuming. He contrasts himself with others, saying that while they offer bundles of goods, he offers only a grain. In essence, he may have little to offer in comparison to others, but what he does offer is valuable and true.
The singer claims to have pins, points, laces, gloves, and other "toys" in his pack - all fitting for a country fair. However, he sets himself apart from these superficial items by revealing his heartfelt emotions. He speaks of duty, service, and love for a pair of "turtles and twins," which could be interpreted as two people he cares for deeply. The last line of the song, "Happy the man that thinks of no removes," seems to convey the idea that the happiest person is the one who doesn't desire anything beyond what they already have.

Sting's song "Gabriel's Message" is a rendition of the biblical story of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel visits Mary to inform her that she is to be the mother of Jesus Christ. The lyrics describe Gabriel's appearance as he descends from heaven with his wings as white as snow and eyes as bright as flames. Upon seeing Mary, Gabriel greets her with the words "All hail, thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favored lady," referring to her as a blessed mother and foretelling that her son will be Emmanuel, as prophesized by seers.
Mary's response to Gabriel's message is one of humility and acceptance, as she meekly bows her head and says, "To me be as it pleaseth God," praising and magnifying His holy name. The lyrics are a beautiful interpretation of this pivotal moment in Christian history, showcasing the wonder and awe of Gabriel's visitation, and the steadfast faith and acceptance of Mary's response.
