Inshallah
Sting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Those around us, curse the sea
Anxious mother turning fearful
Who can blame her, blaming me?
Inshallah, Inshallah
If it be your will, it shall come to pass
Inshallah, Inshallah
As the wind blows, growing colder
Against the sad boats, as we flee
Anxious eyes, search in darkness
With the rising of the sea
Inshallah, Inshallah
If it be your will, it shall come to pass
Inshallah, Inshallah
If it be your will
Sea of worries, sea of fears
In our country, only tears
In our future there's no past
If it be your will, it shall come to pass
Inshallah, Inshallah
If it be your will, it shall come to pass
Inshallah, Inshallah
If it be your will
The lyrics of Sting's "Inshallah" capture the experience of refugees fleeing war-torn countries and making a dangerous journey across the sea to seek safety elsewhere. The opening lines describe a sleeping child on the singer's shoulder, surrounded by people who curse the sea. This is an evocative image that suggests the innocence and vulnerability of those who are forced to flee their homes due to war and persecution. The anxious mother who turns fearful also highlights the precariousness of their situation, as they face danger and uncertainty on their journey.
The refrain of the song is the Arabic phrase "Inshallah", which translates to "if Allah wills it". This echoes the uncertain faith and hope of those who are seeking a better life, even as they face immense risks and uncertainties. The repetition of this phrase throughout the song underscores the importance of belief and hope in the face of adversity. It also highlights the interplay between destiny and free will, as the refugees face an uncertain future and rely on some kind of divine intervention to guide them to safety.
The closing lines of the song paint a poignant picture of the refugee experience, with the sea representing a "sea of worries" and "sea of fears". In a future that has no past, they can only cling to hope that their journey will be successful. The lyrics of "Inshallah" offer a powerful and moving tribute to the thousands of people who have undertaken these perilous journeys in search of a better life.
