My Funny Friend And Me
Sting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When the stars assume their patterns
And the day has made his journey
And we wondered just what happened
To the life we knew before the world changed
When not a thing I held was true
But you were kind to me and you reminded me
That the world is not my playground
There are other things that matter
And when a simple needs protecting
My illusions all would shatter
But you stayed in my corner
The only world I knew was upside down
And now the world and me, I know you carry me
You see the patterns in the big sky
Those constellations look like you and I
Just like the patterns in the big sky
We could be lost, we could refuse to try
But we made it through in the dark night
Would those lucky guys turn out to be
But that unusual blend of my funny friend and me
I'm not as clever as I thought I was
I'm not the boy I used to be because
You showed me something different
You showed me something pure
I always seemed so certain but I was really never sure
But you stayed and you called my name
When others would have walked out on a lousy game
And you could've made it through
But your funny friend and you.
You see the patterns in the big sky
Those constellations look like you and I
That tiny planet in a bigger guy
I don't know whether I should laugh or cry
Just like the patterns in the big sky
We'll be together ?til the end this time
Don't know the answer or the reason why
We'll stick together till the day we die
If I had to do this all a second time
I won't complain or make a fuss
When the angels sing that that unlikely blend
Are those two funny friends, that's us
The lyrics of Sting's song "My Funny Friend And Me" depict a moment of reflection and gratitude towards a person who has stayed by the singer's side through thick and thin. The song talks about the uncertainty and confusion of life, but also the comfort and strength that we can gain from having someone there for us. In the beginning, the singer describes the end of the day, bringing a sense of calmness and contemplation. They then wonder about the change of their life and how nothing seems to be stable anymore. However, the presence of the friend in their life provides a sense of reassurance that there are things beyond their control that they can rely on. The lyrics mention that the world is not just a playground, but there are more important things worth protecting, and when the illusions fade, we can see things more clearly.
Throughout the song, the singer expresses gratitude towards the friend who has stayed loyal and hasn't given up on them. The lyrics talk about how the friend has been a constant, despite everything else being uncertain. The line "I'm not as clever as I thought I was, I'm not the boy I used to be because you showed me something different, you showed me something pure" talks about how the friend has brought positivity, enlightenment, and purity into the singer's life. They later sing about the patterns in the big sky and how they represent them as a duo, a blend that's so unusual yet perfect, and how they're together till the end.
Overall, "My Funny Friend And Me" is much more than a simple tribute to a friendship. It is a ballad that conveys the message that no matter how much life changes, there are certain things - and people - that remain constant. Whether it is the constellations in the sky, personal beliefs, or relationships, it is these constants that keep us grounded and optimistic.

on gabriels_message
Sting's song "Gabriel's Message" is a rendition of the biblical story of the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel visits Mary to inform her that she is to be the mother of Jesus Christ. The lyrics describe Gabriel's appearance as he descends from heaven with his wings as white as snow and eyes as bright as flames. Upon seeing Mary, Gabriel greets her with the words "All hail, thou lowly maiden Mary, Most highly favored lady," referring to her as a blessed mother and foretelling that her son will be Emmanuel, as prophesized by seers.
Mary's response to Gabriel's message is one of humility and acceptance, as she meekly bows her head and says, "To me be as it pleaseth God," praising and magnifying His holy name. The lyrics are a beautiful interpretation of this pivotal moment in Christian history, showcasing the wonder and awe of Gabriel's visitation, and the steadfast faith and acceptance of Mary's response.
