My Funny Valentine
Sting Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Sweet, comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable
yet your my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
are you smart?
don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine
Stay
Each day is valentine's day
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak,
Are you smart?
don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine
Stay
Each day is Valentine's Day
Sting's version of the classic Broadway tune "My Funny Valentine" from his album "The Dream of the Blue Turtles" has a melancholic and somber feel to it. The opening lyrics "My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine, you make me smile with my heart" can be interpreted as a sense of irony, as the valentine being referred to may not be physically attractive in the traditional sense, but their personality and inner beauty are what captivate the singer. This is further explored in the lyric "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable, yet you're my favorite work of art," which emphasizes that beauty transcends physical appearance.
The second verse, "Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?" is a commentary on societal norms and the unrealistic expectations of physical beauty. The lines suggest that it's unfair to judge someone based solely on their appearance, and what truly matters is intelligence and personality. The refrain "don't change a hair for me, not if you care for me, stay little valentine, stay, each day is Valentine's Day" is a message of love and acceptance, urging the valentine to embrace their individuality and not conform to societal expectations.
