Message In A Bottle
Sting / Gordon Sumner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just a cast away, an island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day, no one here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle yeah

A year has passed since I wrote my note
I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life but love can break your heart

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah

Walked out this morning, I don't believe what I saw
A hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone in being alone
A hundred billion castaways looking for a home

I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah (Message in a bottle, yeah)

Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS

Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS

Overall Meaning

In this song, Sting tells the story of a castaway, alone and desperate for human connection after spending an unknown amount of time stranded on a deserted island. He feels overwhelmed with loneliness and sees no end in sight. The only way he can cope with his situation is to write a message on a piece of paper and put it in a bottle, hoping that it will eventually make its way to someone who can help him. He sends an SOS to the world, hoping that someone will hear his plea and rescue him before he falls into despair.

As the song progresses, one year has passed, and the castaway is still alone. He realizes that hope and love are the only things that can keep him going in his current circumstances. Finally, he discovers that he is not alone in his plight as he stumbles upon a beach where millions of other bottles have washed up on shore. He concludes by sending out an SOS, reinforcing his message more explicitly this time.

This song speaks to the universal human desire for connection and the need for hope in times of crisis. It's a powerful reminder that no matter how far away we may be from others, there is always a chance that our message will be heard, and help will come.

Sting is like wine, getting better with age.

love this version...nice tempo and guitar arrangements.
Nothing, absolutely nothing will replace Stu and Andy (putting Sting’s amazing compositions through the right ‘Police treatment’) but this one does not disappoint.

@Bobfaber1992

Brasil?

@sullybiker6520

The two guitars make a big difference to the tonal breadth of the verses, and I missed Copeland's crazy tight snare. I agree, it's very different but I like what they did here.

@gentasepriandi999

My best version maybe live synchronicty..this version ok though with 2 guitar..but miss some drum fill by the only stewart coppeland. Its just me perhaps.

@sullybiker6520

@Genta Sepriandi No I entirely get it. This was the difference with Stewart and Andy. Stewart's style was always very energetic and the songs do feel different for it.

Couldn't agree more
