Wrapped Around Your Finger
Sting & The Police/The Police Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
You will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you'll find your servant is your master

You'll be wrapped around my finger

You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger

Overall Meaning

Sting & The Police's song "Wrapped Around Your Finger" is a powerful ballad with deep and meaningful lyrics. The song describes the relationship between two people, where one person is in control of the other. The song starts with "You consider me the young apprentice, caught between the Scylla and Charibdes, hypnotized by you if I should linger, Staring at the ring around your finger." The song describes the master and servant dynamic where the singer is the young apprentice and the other person is the master who has him wrapped around her finger. The singer is desperate to learn the knowledge that the other person possesses, and he is willing to do anything for her.

As the song progresses, the singer states that he knows what the other person is up to, and he is willing to listen to her tuition so that he can achieve his goals. He will be wrapped around her finger and will do anything that she asks of him. The song takes a dramatic twist with the line "I will turn your face to alabaster when you'll find your servant is your master" which signifies that the singer knows that eventually he will have the control over the other person. In the end, the tables will turn, and the other person will be wrapped around his finger.

Overall, the song is a metaphor for power and control in relationships. It shows how one person can be completely controlled by another person and how the dynamic can change over time. The lyrics are thought-provoking, and the music is beautiful, making it an excellent song to listen to.

I am and I was back in the early 80's too, I remember listening to this on my dad's old motorola B100W tube stereo that we had in the hallway of our farm house growing up. I used to listen to that radio alot when I was very young. That radio always had awesome base sound and was just good sounding radio all around.
