Fool's Gold
Stone Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gold road's sure a long road
Winds on through the hills for fifteen days
The pack on my back is aching
The straps seem to cut me like a knife

Gold road's sure a long road
Winds on through the hills for fifteen days
The pack on my back is aching
The straps seem to cut me like a knife
I'm no clown, I won't back down, don't need you to tell me what's going down
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down

I'm standing alone, I'm watching you all, I'm seeing you sinking
I'm standing alone, you're weighing the gold, I'm watching you sinking
Fool's gold

These boots weren't made for walking
The marquis de sade never made no boots like these
Gold's just around the corner
Breakdown's coming up round the bend

Sometimes you have to try to get along dear
I know the truth and I know what you're thinking
Down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down, down

I'm standing alone, I'm watching you all, I'm seeing you sinking

I'm standing alone, you're weighing the gold, I'm watching you sinking
Fool's gold

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stone Roses's Fool's Gold describe the journey of a miner, as he navigates a long and treacherous road in search of gold. The lyrics also suggest that the journey is not just physical but mental as well, as the miner is weighed down by the pain of his heavy backpack and his isolation from others. The miner's pain is portrayed through vivid imagery, such as "the straps seem to cut me like a knife".

However, the lyrics also hint at a deeper message, one that deals with the idea of "fool's gold". The miner seems to be aware that the gold he is searching for may be more of a mirage than a reality, as he sings "I'm no clown, I won't back down, don't need you to tell me what's going down". The phrase "fool's gold" is often used to describe something that is not as valuable as it first appears, and is therefore a metaphor for chasing dreams that may never come to fruition. This could be a commentary on the human condition, as we are all searching for something that we believe will make us happy or fulfilled, but that may not actually exist.

Overall, Fool's Gold is a song that takes the listener on a journey through the physical and emotional landscape of a miner, while also providing commentary on the nature of human desire and the search for fulfillment. It is a song that speaks to the universal experience of longing and striving for something more.

I have yet to hear any reformed group ever reproduce the standard of music they previously made. Same applies here although it’s each to their own

One of the best songs I've ever heard from one of the greatest British bands ever. I was 19 when this came out, now I'm 50 and this track is still the mutts nuts.

@Patrickjohnphotography

I agree. Very Mutt Nutty!

@craiggallagher7292

Same, but I am 55 (gulp). I think The Stone Roses were a nice segue to Oasis. I went nuts when Squire played with Oasis at Knebworth.
