Hello
Stone Temple Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello, it's late
You know I've tried to stop the rain
Did you read about it?
Did you think about it?
Did you cry but nothing came?

Nothing matters again
I didn't think it'd last that long
But I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round
And the music is too loud

It's just a game that we used to play
I didn't think we'd take it all the way
It kills me just because it can't be erased
We're married

Hello, it's late
I know we tried to win the game
Did you hear about it?
Did you dream about it?
I know you cried but nothing changed

Nothing matters again
I didn't think we'd last that long
But I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round
And the music is too loud

It's just a game that we used to play
I didn't think we'd take it all the way
It kills me just because it can't be erased
We're married, married

But I'm just sittin' on this merry-go-round
And the music is too loud

It's just a game that we used to play
I didn't think we'd take it all the way

It kills me just because it can't be erased
We're married, married, married, married

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stone Temple Pilots' song Hello It's Late convey a sense of regret and nostalgia for the past. The singer of the song is reminiscing about a failed relationship and the way it consumed their lives. The title of the song serves as an introduction to the conversation that's about to take place, and it sets the somber tone of the piece. The line "You know I've tried to stop the rain" suggests that the singer has attempted to prevent something inevitable from happening, but ultimately failed.

The lyrics then dive into memories of the past, asking if the other person read about or thought about what happened, or even cried about it. However, the singer recognizes that crying didn't change anything, and the relationship is over. "Nothing matters again" serves as a reminder that the end of the relationship was inevitable, but the singer didn't believe it would last this long. The line "But I'm just sitting on this merry-go-round" suggests that the singer feels stuck in a cycle of thoughts.

The last part of the song repeats the line "It's just a game that we used to play," which serves as a metaphor for the relationship. The singer didn't think that the game of love would be taken that far, but it ultimately consumed them and cannot be erased. The final line "We're married, married, married, married" repeats the concept of being stuck and unable to move on from the past.

100%...every album is different but they are all great. Most people stays with Core and Purple but Shangri and N*4 are masterpieces too.

Concordo com você! Eu aqui do Brasil até hoje não superei a morte do vocalista.

It should be understood by even a person with a 15 IQ that they were a routinely top charting band of the 90s which also sold out world tours ,repeatedly

Grandelusion

Tiny music is their best for me.

This song simply just stands out. One of the finest piece by STP. Can't imagine its been almost 20 years since this came out

Fui no show do STP no rio de janeiro agora em maio, e cara... o jeff é incrível, tá mandando benzão, mas me dói DEMAIS, saber que nunca vou conseguir ver scott weiland performar. Sou fã desse homem, pqp

The older I get, the more I understand what the band was trying to accomplish out of Shangri-La-Dee-Da. (A hell of an album name, TBH.) And this song just is stunning. Relationships falling apart and sometimes, it's not always someone's fault. Sometimes, it really is what it is. The musical arrangements are among the finest the band has ever created with Scott as frontman. God, I hope he's at peace now. RIP. And much love to the surviving band members and Jeff too.

The depth of this beautiful song can't be measured.
Be at peace, Scott.
