Kitchenware and Candybars
Stone Temple Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody told me, I know where to go
Somebody showed me, I was last to know

Sell me down the river, sell me down the river
Sell me down the river, sell me down the river

What I wanted is what I wanted
What I wanted is what she wanted

Unfriendly feelings, down on wounded knees
Unfriendly reasons, some blind mothers need

Sell me down the river, sell me down the river
Sell me down the river, sell me down the river

What I wanted is what we wanted
What we wanted is what she wanted

You read the words and it sells you life
They sell their words but it's all a lie

Somebody told me, I know where to go
Somebody showed me and I was last to know

Sell me down the river, sell me down the river
Sell me down the river, sell me down the river

What I wanted is what I wanted
What we wanted is what we wanted

What I wanted is what I wanted
What we wanted, what she wanted

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stone Temple Pilots' song "Kitchenware and Candybars" are open to interpretation, but one possible interpretation is that it's about being controlled by someone else's desires and expectations. The singer of the song is someone who has been led astray by someone else, who showed them the way but only after everyone else already knew where to go. The refrain of "sell me down the river" suggests betrayal and being taken advantage of. The singer is left on "wounded knees" with "unfriendly feelings" because they were not given the chance to pursue what they truly wanted.

However, there is a sense of ambiguity in the lyrics, particularly around the line "What I wanted is what she wanted." This could imply that the singer's desires and expectations are not entirely their own, but are influenced by someone else, perhaps a romantic partner. The reference to being sold a lie in the final stanza suggests that the singer has been misled or deceived by someone else's influence.

Overall, the lyrics suggest the struggle to maintain one's autonomy in the face of external pressures and expectations.

I met Scotty in a Japanese restaurant in Soho back in the early 90s. It was just after they'd left the Mighty Joe moniker, so their fame wasn't so astronomical that he was inaccessible, but I'd already heard a Core sample, early on, so I was like, "OMG." Totally, embarrassingly fangirl. He invited me to join him, Robert, & Dean. We sat there, eating sushi and drinking saki for hours, talking the music industry, where the band was headed, love, life. It's one of the top 10 experiences in my life.

The next time I saw him, was backstage at an event in 2003. He was so high, I had to help him to the Green Room. There was never any judgement from me, but I was super worried about. The thing about Scotty, though, was after like 6 hours of talk on a random day in the 90s, he still recognized me and knew my name so high he could barely function. He was full of hugs and "What has your life been like?" and everything. That's just the kind of man he was. Strong, beyond. Wonderful, smart, sweet, funny. Addicted. I stayed with him until I was sure someone was there to really take care of him, but by that time, everyone seemed so tired and annoyed, no one seemed to care much, anymore.

I have to say that I loved that man all his life. I think I'm still mourning the loss. That said, I wanted to tell people what a random nobody from the middle of Illinois' experience was with him. He was amazing. Every minute. Cold sober or high as a kite, he was always a wonderful person! Rest in peace, love.

thank you for sharing. there was a story that came out just after he died on some alternative music website that detailed his relationship with his best friend. it showed much of the same sort of kind, caring nature u expressed. i'd been a big fan since the release of core and felt very connected to the tone of the music they created. it wasnt until that article that i realized he had graduated the same year i had and from a school in the same "cif sports division" as mine. we hung around the same scenes in the area for music and whatnot....
i met no doubt just before they got big working as their stage manager for gradnights at disneyland, would watch bradley from sublime pre fame - playing impromptu sets in a ground floor satellite bar in a hotel right next to disneyland where we would go after shifts got to know bands like save ferris and even had some interactions with travis barker from blink 182 when he was the drummer for the aquabats, but i can say 100% there is no chance any of these people (rip bradley) would remember me in the slightest degree, and i couldnt expect them to at all.
that scott remembered you is exemplary of his true nature as a human.

rip scott

thanks again for sharing your story.

Hard to find an album between 1991-1995 that wasn’t good. Such a good time for music

@Bmblb815

This song is only known by the true fans and those who understood its meaning. Scott like the other great talents died before their time
