Three Wishes
Stone Temple Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Still in the morning sun
It was Saturday, if I don't mistake
And all that we've become
Turned to lullabies of love and heartache

It brings the rain
I hear your name
I wish you were ready
Ready for someone
When all is done
It's why you run
'Cause you were not ready
Ready for someone

Once and twice begun
These three wishes I cannot replace
And what would they become?
Turn to lullabies of love and heartache

It brings the rain
I hear your name
I wish you were ready
Ready for someone
When all is done
It's why you run
But you were not ready
Ready for someone

There's not much more left I can do or say
Your silence is telling the truth 'cause you walked away
'Cause you walked away

It brings the rain
I hear your name
I wish you were ready
Ready for someone
When all is done
It's why you run

But you were not ready
Ready for someone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Stone Temple Pilots's "Three Wishes" center around a sense of regret and resignation in a failed relationship. The first verse sets the scene, describing a Saturday morning where the singer looks back on what they had become, which had turned into "lullabies of love and heartache." The chorus repeats the refrain that the subject was not "ready for someone," even as the singer wishes they were. The second verse repeats the same pattern, emphasizing the theme of loss: "once and twice begun / these three wishes I cannot replace."

The bridge of the song changes slightly, adding a note of finality to the theme of regret: "There's not much more left I can do or say / Your silence is telling the truth 'cause you walked away / 'Cause you walked away." The song closes with one final chorus, repeating the same lyrics as before. Overall, the lyrics are a thoughtful reflection on the ways in which relationships can go wrong, and the endings that can leave us with a sense of longing and regret.

LYRICS

Stealing the morning sun,
it was Saturday, if I don't mistake
And all that you've become,
turn to lullabies of love and heartache

It brings the rain, I hear your name
I wish you were ready, ready for someone
When all is done, it's why you run
coz you were not ready,
ready for someone

Once and twice begun,
these three wishes I cannot replace
What would they become?
Turn to lullabies of love and heartache

It brings the rain, I hear your name
I wish you were ready, ready for someone
When all is done, it's why you run
but you were not ready,
ready for someone

There's not much more left I can do or say
Your silence is telling the truth
coz you walked away,
coz you walked away

It brings the rain, I hear your name
I wish you were ready, ready for someone
When all is done, it's why you run
but you were not ready,
ready for someone

(Ooooohhhhoohhooohhhhh, for someone)

The DeLeo brothers are something very special. The way they create suspense and channel a mood is otherworldly. Hear and feel every brush stroke. Never fail to inspire. Been here since Core, will never leave.

@cooltunesmadeeasy

They are awesome songwriter gotta agree

@MarJo333

I absolutely agree. They are versatile. One of my very all time favorite bands...

This song is fucking great. Anyone who shits on STP for having a new singer hasn't listened to any of their new stuff. This is very much the same band--minus a key factor, obviously, Scott Weiland was magnificent--but give Jeff Gutt the credit he's due. Dude's an amazing singer, he's got the fortitude to take on an unthinkable job, and he's doing the band justice, man. I'm happy for music as a whole that STP is still making new material, and they're honoring their legacy with a singer like Jeff.

Scott Weiland will always be one of the greats. They're not trying to diminish that in any way. Stone Temple Pilots live on. And this song proves it.

Keep it up, gentlemen, your music is superb.

I get it..it does sound good..
But I cant get over Scott being gone...sorry

I’m listening to this album waiting for that silver tongue superman vibe to kick in, but we get these vibey anthems over and over. They keep doing that “STP” thing they do. Zeppelin, the Doors and a handful of others have created the vibey records. STP = all time great American rock band. LOVE THIS BAND!

Well said brother!

As a huge fan of Scott, I have to agree. Mourning over an iconic singer will always cloud our perceptions, thoughts, and beliefs. All of us in a bad mood over Scott.
