Washed My Hands In Muddy Water
Stonewall Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was born in Macon Georgia they kept my dad in the Macon jail
Dad said son if you keep your hands clean
You won't hear them bloodhounds on your trail
But I fell in with bad companions we robbed a man in Tennessee
The sheriff caught me way up in Nashville they locked me up and threw away the key
I washed my hands in muddy water washed my hands but they didn't come clean
Tried to do like daddy told me but I must have washed my hands in a muddy stream
I asked the jailor when's my time up he said son we won't forget
And if you try to keep your hands clean we may make a good man of you yet
I couldn't wait to do my sentence I broke out of the Nashville jail

I just crossed the line of Georgia and I can hear them bloodhounds on my trail
I washed my hands...

Overall Meaning

Stonewall Jackson's song "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water" portrays the story of a man who was taught to keep his hands clean to avoid the bloodhounds, but falls in with bad companions, and ends up being imprisoned for robbery. The song starts with him reminiscing about his childhood in Macon, Georgia, and his father's advice to keep his hands clean to avoid trouble with law enforcement. However, the man's poor choices and association with the wrong crowd lead him to rob someone in Tennessee, leading to his imprisonment in Nashville.

The man then attempts to follow his father's advice by washing his hands in muddy water to cleanse himself of his past mistakes, but his efforts are futile. He seeks redemption and a fresh start after asking the jailor when his sentence will be up, telling him that he hopes he will become a good man if he keeps his hands clean. Nevertheless, he cannot wait to be released from prison and eventually breaks out, fleeing to Georgia with the sounds of baying bloodhounds at his heels.

The song can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about the consequences of making poor life choices and the inescapable repercussions that follow. It highlights themes of redemption, regret, and the search for a fresh start after making mistakes. The imagery of "washing one's hands in muddy water" also speaks to the idea of trying to cleanse oneself of past mistakes, but realizing that these mistakes cannot be erased so easily.

This song is so tight. The very beginning really rewards listening on headphones. Love this guy.

back in the times when stereo had fully panned right and left parts with vocals centered - maybe the brain
processes the good examples of that perhaps better on headphones than a spread and claustrophobic mix across the panoramic stage (?) Its been out of favor for a long time. I also like real 3D movies of good content (not much from Hollywood in that last phase with poor themes and conversions) -- sad 3D TVs were nixed.

When I was a baby and couldn't sleep, this is the song my dad would sing to me while we swung on the front porch ❤️
