I lay in the fields
Watching you arise the dead in me
Everyone’s looking for something.
Across the ground, scattered with the bones of past psalms and revolutions and the old, worn faith your father lent you.
Everyone is singing a song. And it’s always about the same thing. Love lost, love found, that great open space between heaven and earth.
Forget the proselytism, forget the harsh edges of the letter of the law. There’s someone up there, and He is like water and fire, deep with grace and mystery.
These are not songs of a preacher. They’re not ballads to lilting love. These are just alms to that old, worn faith. Skin for the skeleton. The sound of someone looking for a resurrection. From the opening throes of ‘Hallelujah’ to the closing refrain of ‘Resurrection Song’, Water and Fire is the sound of someone who travels with dust on his feet, connected to the earth, but eyeing heaven.
Everyone’s looking for something. Sometimes it is home. Sometimes it’s that long lost love. Sometimes it’s God.
Most times it is all of these.
This is my resurrection song,
Written in the only ink I own.
Raisin' A Boy
Strahan Lyrics

Buyin' the lie: "we need more blood to pay it off"
I'm walking on this troubled shore
Finding the line between your pardon and my hands
I want my resurrection, please
So I'm letting go of all that I've seen
Don't give me milk, God, I want meat
'Cause I've been raisin' a boy
But I ain't him anymore
Pile 'em high, I need fuel to fan the season
Corner the lie, this ignorance I can't afford
I want my grace-empowered peace
So I'm letting go of all that I need
So give me more, God, I want Thee
'Cause I've been raisin' a boy
Yes I've been raisin' a boy
Well I got mo excuse, I ain't just a man
I'm a Spirit son, I've got heart and hands
I've been raisin' a boy
But I ain't him anymore
No I ain't him anymore
'Cause I've been raisin' a boy
Yes I've been raisin' a boy
Yes I've been raisin' a boy
Now I ain't raisin' a boy
The lyrics of Strahan's song "Raisin' a Boy" appear to be reflective and contemplative, with the singer expressing a desire for something more meaningful and substantial than the "lie" and "ignorance" that seem to dominate society. He recognizes that there is a line between grace and justice, and he wants to find a balance that will allow him to live in true freedom. The notion of raising a boy seems to serve as a metaphor for the challenges of navigating life and trying to grow and mature while still holding onto one's true identity and values.
Through the lyrics of the song, the singer expresses his frustration with the limitations of his current understanding and experience. He wants to experience a deeper, more authentic relationship with God and to be empowered with grace and peace to face the challenges ahead. The repeated line "I've been raisin' a boy, but I ain't him anymore" suggests a sense of growth and transformation, with the singer feeling like he has outgrown his former self and is ready for something new and different. Overall, the song seems to speak to the universal human desire for purpose, meaning, and a sense of connection to something greater than oneself.
