Containing elements of death metal, thrash metal, black metal, progressive metal and industrial metal, Strapping Young Lad's music was characterized by the use of complex time signatures, polyrhythmic guitar riffing and drumming, blast beats and Wall of Sound production. The band's musical direction was mainly determined by Townsend, whose battle with bipolar disorder and dark sense of humour were major influences on his songwriting. Townsend was also noted for his eccentric appearance and on-stage behaviour, which greatly contributed to the band's intense live performances.
The band gained critical success and a growing underground fan base from their 1997 album City. After a hiatus between 1999 and 2002, the band released three more albums, reaching their commercial peak with the 2006 effort, The New Black. Townsend disbanded Strapping Young Lad in May 2007, announcing his decision to retreat from public view while continuing to record solo albums.
The legacy continues.....

Strapping Young Lad Lyrics

Born to run away
Children in the middle with the village idiot
So he never made the potty grade
Now maybe he pulled a little closer
Cold in a mousy way
Boom boom as they came a little closer
Now Devy has to eat it in his own way
Broke in a dirty way
Boom boom is the beating that I hear in the night
But no one hears, so no one knows and no one fucks with me
Devy wants a word with the master
I got no need to run away
Down on the road isn't easy
But I never would back away
Boom boom in the morning with the night sounds
No way to run away
Boom boom as the boredom of monogamy
Hits one more time...
No one must know...
No one must know...
No one must know...
No one must know this machine...
Devy got a taste of some black shit
Born in another way
And it probably would have been easy
But it never worked out that way
Boom boom in the corner with the well-soiled
Bound to amalgamate
Boom boom as it kills the inhibitions
...no more games
No one must know...
The song "AAA" by Strapping Young Lad begins with a description of the lead singer, Devin Townsend, as a troubled teenager who is alienated from his peers due to his inability to fit in with them. It seems that he was not able to pass the "potty grade", which may refer to basic hygiene and cleanliness. Instead of being accepted by the other kids in his village, he is left on the sidelines with the village idiot. The lyrics suggest that Devin has a sense of impending danger, as represented by the repeated use of "Boom boom" as the situation becomes closer and closer.
As the song progresses, we see that Devin has internalized this sense of isolation and danger, feeling the unease of his situation but also feeling powerless to escape it. He has to "eat it in his own way", suggesting that he has found some way to cope with his situation but also that he is not at ease with it. The repeated "Boom boom" motif underscores the sense of unease that he feels, as he is trapped in a situation he cannot escape from. He wants to speak to the master, perhaps a sign of his desire to escape this world and find a place of comfort and acceptance, but he knows that it is not easy to leave the path he has chosen.
