Containing elements of death metal, thrash metal, black metal, progressive metal and industrial metal, Strapping Young Lad's music was characterized by the use of complex time signatures, polyrhythmic guitar riffing and drumming, blast beats and Wall of Sound production. The band's musical direction was mainly determined by Townsend, whose battle with bipolar disorder and dark sense of humour were major influences on his songwriting. Townsend was also noted for his eccentric appearance and on-stage behaviour, which greatly contributed to the band's intense live performances.
The band gained critical success and a growing underground fan base from their 1997 album City. After a hiatus between 1999 and 2002, the band released three more albums, reaching their commercial peak with the 2006 effort, The New Black. Townsend disbanded Strapping Young Lad in May 2007, announcing his decision to retreat from public view while continuing to record solo albums.

Strapping Young Lad Lyrics

Fighting for Jesus through prices of oil
See how your demons are forming a wall
Burning and beating and raping them all
Reaching for something when nothing else matters
Buddha to Krishna through Jesus and Allah
See how your demons are forming a wall
Far from here…we'll light away
So unclear…we'll find the way
To war…we ride
The lyrics to Strapping Young Lad's song "Aftermath" are a reflection of the harsh realities of war and religious conflicts. The opening line "Give us a reason for the coming of war" questions the motives behind these conflicts that often result in countless deaths and destruction. The next line, "Fighting for Jesus through prices of oil", portrays how religion and economic interests are often intertwined in these conflicts.
The next few lines are a commentary on the brutalities committed during wars, with the phrase "Burning and beating and raping them all" depicting the horrors inflicted upon innocent people caught in the crossfire. The chorus "Reaching for something when nothing else matters, Buddha to Krishna through Jesus and Allah" suggests that people often turn towards religion in times of desperation and helplessness.
The last few lines of the song "Far from here...we'll light away, so unclear...we'll find the way to war...we ride" express a sense of resignation to the continuing cycle of violence and wars that seem inevitable.
Overall, "Aftermath" is a powerful and introspective song that highlights the impact of war and religious conflicts on individuals and society as a whole.

This song always gave me a mental image of a huge, unstoppable juggernaut...
0:00 - 0:38: all the crew running to their places, pilots, engineers, gun crews, all of them scrambling to bring this huge, monstrous machine to life...
0:39 - 0:57: start the engines, fire up the furnaces, load the guns with shells the size of buildings, pistons the size of tower blocks and gears the size of houses scream into motion, and smoke billows from a hundred exhausts, and a single, impossibly loud horn blares, tolling a death knell, and treads the length of stadiums churn into movement...
0:58 - 2:18: the monstrous machine lurches forward, shuddering under its own weight, slowly gaining traction, as men sweat, toil, and roar to bring the colossal weapon to life, and it slowly picks up speed, getting faster, faster, lurching towards its destination...
2:19 - 3:09: the defenders see the massive juggernaut lurching over the brow of the hill, and they scramble desperately to prepare, closing the gates, reinforcing the walls, training every gun they have on the massive thing...
3:10 - 3:47: the defenders open fire, an onslaught of firepower that would reduce any normal army to dust and bloody chunks, an impossible amount of ordnance unleashed upon the monstrous god-machine heading toward them, hurling everything they have at it in the vain hopes of stopping it...
3:48: the last shell impacts, and there's a split second of silence... have they stopped it?
3:50 - 4:28 the machine hurtles out of the smoke at terminal velocity, and the defenders scream, they flee, they scramble over each other, trampling each other to death to try and flee from their death as it hurtles towards them, until...
4:29 -4:38: the juggernaut impacts the city walls, smashing through with contemptuous ease, crushing walls tens of metres thick, smashing through buildings like wind blowing through piles of leaves, the defenders either sent hurtling into the air, or crushed beneath its treads...
4:39 - 5:55 the juggernaut opens fire, unleashing its ordenance, and there's no stopping it; The city burns, its inhabitants swept away in a merciless tide of slaughter. Make peace with your gods, for the end has come.
5:56 - end: the city lies in ruins within minutes, the last of the survivors are being picked off and swept away, before the god-machine lumbers to its next victim, leaving ruin and ashes in its wake.
