Strawbs - Ghosts

Sweet Dreams

Go to sleep my babies
Don't you wake up
The stars will keep you company
So close your eyes
Old Uncle Moon will shine his dearest sweetest dreams
And hold you in your arms
Until the morning comes.

Night Light

Dark the night, not a sound
Damp and cold, frosty ground
Above your head the lion screams
To tear you from your moonlit dreams.

Damp with sweat, mouth is dry
Twisted branches catch the eye
Beside your bed the angel stands
You cannot touch his withered hands.

Guardian Angel

As the lion's eyes dance before me
They are kindly yet bloody red
I can see that he is smiling
But I cannot live inside his head.

There the needle stands before me
I climb inside it towards the light
Where the angel stands in glory
His sword of peace defends the night.

So the world is spread before
As I fly high on angel wings
But the angel is deceiving
For he is weeping as he sings.

Night Light (continued)

Early birds, morning breeze
Spinning leaves, sleepy trees

Gently tap the window pane
It's good to see the sun again.

Overall Meaning

The Strawbs' song "Ghosts" is a haunting composition that describes a child's night terrors, where the world switches from benevolent to malevolent in a jarring manner. The lullaby-like first verse talks to the child and assures him/her that there is nothing to fear, and encourages him/her to go to sleep, with the stars as companions. Old Uncle Moon is personified and is watching over the child, holding him/her protected until the morning comes. However, subsequent verses take the music in an unexpected direction as the dreams turn into nightmares. The night light can do nothing to banish the frightening images that taunt the child. Despite the angel's appearance within the room, they are powerless to provide any help or reprieve against the torment. The angel stands before the child, but the child cannot touch him / her as the angel's hands are withered, and the imagery in the lyrics is more of horror than reassurance.

In the next stanza, a new character - the lion - is introduced, and the angel, who once stood in glory, weeps as he sings. The imagery becomes darker as the angel's beauty is offset against the lion's blood-red eyes that smile in a disturbing way. The "needle" is also present in this verse, indicating a type of insanity. The lyrics suggest that the angel is misleading the child into believing that he will be safe and protected by spreading his wings and flying above the world. Still, in reality, the angel is weeping and unable to do anything to assist the child against the horrid things they see.

Towards the end of the song, the last verse indicates that the dawn has arrived, and the child can finally overcome the nightmares. The morning breeze, the sounds of the leaves rustling and birds chirping, and the gentle tap on the windowpane reassure the child that the terrors of the night are gone, and the sun's bright light is emanating. The lyrics could either be a narrative interpretation of a child's nightmare or a metaphor for a young person's awakening to the sinister aspect of life.

On peut dire qu'il s'agit du premier groupe d'importance de Rick Wakeman.
En effet, durant ses études musicales Rick participe sans brio à des performances au sein de 2 groupes locaux avant de se joindre à STRAWBS :
The Atlantic Blues en 1963
The Concords en 1965

Wakeman rejoint YES in 1971 après le LP "From the Witchwood".

The Vision Of The Lady Of The Lake (live inédit)

The Strawbs - One of my favorite bands to this day. HIGHLY UNDER RATED!!!

@frenchhornwoman

I only ever knew the Strabs thanks to their hit Part of the union. 1973. I was 5 years old. I progressed through a lot of glam rock then and moved to heavy rock, Iron Maiden but also prog rock like Marillion, but back then didn't find the real Strawbs. I am also a 50's RnR fan but also way back to 20's blues. I am also a classical musician, french horn. So I am covering all sorts of eras. I did see Ella Fitzgerald live so lucky.
This was excellent.

@Rhialto-the-Marvellous

I delight in the guitar virtuosity of Page, Gilmour, Green, Giltrap, Howe, Hackett, Nelson and Oldfield, but Lambert when he takes centre stage, he elevates any Strawbs composition from simple brilliance to the sublime.

@VibesvilleStudio

Bought this album on cassette from a cut out bin in 1980... never stopped playing it to this day, albeit digitally. One of the great albums of all time, seamless story telling!!
Oh.... And it rocks!!

Had the honor to see and meet them in NYC 1985 at the Bottom Line, amazing show and people! Top 10 desert island disc for sure!!

@packerjip9665

It rocks on and on.

@htos1av

1974, a club called Atlantis, in Atlanta, Ga. I sat on stage as a 14yo kid! BLOWN AWAY!!! They even gave me a vinyl copy demo-with the hole punch. After experiencing that, I KNEW EXACTLY what I was doing with my life. Thanks, guys!!!

@adrianlewis.w5265

My favourite band from first hearing ‘a collection of Old Antiques and Curios’ around 1970. ‘Blue Angel’ inspired me, saw every concert they ever played in Manchester, including discussing lyrics with Dave Cousins in a bar in Stockport after he played a solo gig around 1980.

@dannyfournier6657

Always ways and always will be my favorite band from this era of progressive rock music . This band went far beyond any other band in its day

@greyarea3804

I saw the scrubs live three times and three times I was not disappointed. They are incredible on stage. They play to the audience not to themselves

@TheDavidtk240

These guys are great and underappreciated.
