Under the Milkyway
Strawpeople Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes when this place gets kind of empty,
Sound of their breath fades with the light.
They think about the loveless fascination,
Under the milky way tonight.

Lower the curtain down on Memphis,
Lower the curtain down all right.
I got no time for private consultation,
Under the milky way tonight.

Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.
Wish I knew what you were looking for.
Might have known what you would find.

And it's something quite peculiar,
Something thats shimmering and white.
Leads you here despite your destination,
Under the milky way tonight

Under the milky way tonight.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Strawpeople's song "Under the Milky Way" are quite contemplative, as they describe a place that is empty and silent, almost as if all human presence has evaporated. The sound of the breaths of people fade away with light, which could mean that the song is describing a moment when someone is alone, either late at night or early in the morning, when everything is still and quiet. In this state of emptiness and solitude, the singer experiences a "loveless fascination" with the world around them. This is probably a feeling of detachment, as if the beauty of life is passing them by, or maybe they are just observing everything with disinterest because of a lack of affection in their life.

The chorus then comes in, and it is quite simple in its structure, but it works effectively in conveying a mood of melancholy and longing. The singer wishes they knew what someone else was searching for, as they peek into their world and wonder what drives them, and what they hope to find. The line "under the milky way tonight" is repeated several times, and it seems to indicate that regardless of what anyone is searching for, we are all under this vast and beautiful universe, and we share in its grandeur and mystery.

The third verse of "Under the Milky Way" is where the mood of the song shifts to something more positive and hopeful. The singer describes something "quite peculiar", which is shimmering and white. This could be a reference to stars or snow, or even a metaphysical state of being. Whatever it is, this peculiar element leads you to where you are supposed to be, and it brings you there despite your destination. This line is often interpreted as meaning that life has a way of leading us to where we belong, even if we are not aware of it or we resist it. The song repeats its chorus, and in the end, it leaves us with a sense of awe and wonder at the vastness of the universe and the interconnectedness of all things.

Yes I know it was a song by th e Church originally but I love both versions and I hope you do too!

Not a bad rendition (in a world of numerous renditions of UTMW). I like the album cover (?) artwork. Nothing tops the Church original version, of course, but this is nice.
