Anyways, 'Slice of Life' is about elitist kids who think their opinion on musical taste is the only right one. It's also about the kids who need to inflict fear on other people by physically or verbally abusing others to prove a point. The point being that they are the 'Real Hardcore Kids.' What I get out of this song is the fact that there are so many people in this scene that think they are cooler, tougher and all around better than everyone else.
In most cases the only reason they feel that way is because they got together with some fake 'homies' and started acting like a bunch of tough guys who only like whatever band's demo. 'You jump ship real quick to stay ahead of the trend. You tell yourself you like it but we know you pretend. So down to earth closer to the hardcore. It must be lonely on the ocean floor.' This is my personal favourite lyric in the song. It just briefly explains how some people have to ride the coat tails of others to feel important. But in the end they're just losing sight of themselves and will end up alone. The title for the song came from the TV series Dexter (it's the name of Dexter's boat)."

You're caught
I don't even think you know, we've got the evidence concrete
You're sinking with cement on your feet
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
Blending in the shadows while the sun is blinding
Leaving an open mind on shore
It makes me think (it makes me think), what other secrets you're hiding
Striving to be the unapproachable
The king on a dead throne of lies
Preaching and speaking with no proof of the truth to the youth
With impressionable eyes
Be afraid, be very afraid
Be afraid, be very afraid
And you should fear me (fear me)
No telling what I'll do, 'cause I know the real you
And now you're drowning
You have no sense of yourself in the sea of lost identity
With an army behind you, there's power inside you
But when you're alone, I bet you're not so hard
With an army behind you, there's power inside you
But when you're alone, I bet you're not so hard
You've masked all meaning with some pros
You're caught
I don't even think you know, we've got the evidence concrete
You're sinking with cement on your feet
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
You jump ship real quick to stay ahead of the trend
You tell yourself you like it but we know you pretend
So down to earth, closer to the hardcore
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
It must be lonely
It must be lonely on the ocean floor (It must be lonely)
It must be lonely on the ocean floor (It must be lonely)
It must be lonely on the ocean floor (It must be lonely)
It must be lonely on the ocean floor It must be lonely
It must be lonely
With an army behind you, there's power inside you
But when you're alone, I bet you're not so hard
With an army behind you, there's power inside you
But when you're alone, I bet you're not so hard
It must be lonely on the ocean floor
In "Slice Of Life," Stray from the Path seems to be calling out those who claim to have all the answers or hold positions of authority without any real substance to support their claims. The opening lines suggest that this person has tried to hide their true intentions behind superficial language or "some pros," but they have been caught nonetheless. The band claims to possess concrete evidence that this person has been acting deceitfully or dishonestly. Ultimately, the person is "sinking with cement on [their] feet," implying that they will suffer consequences for their actions.
The band then begins to question the motivations of this individual, suggesting that they may simply crave attention or adulation. The line, "striving to be the unapproachable / the king on a dead throne of lies," implies that this person is more interested in power and prestige than actual substance. They may be "preaching and speaking with no proof of the truth to the youth," suggesting that they are targeting impressionable listeners with their message. The repetition of the line "be afraid, be very afraid," adds to the sense of fear and foreboding that surrounds this person.
Towards the end of the song, the band suggests that this person is ultimately alone, despite the power or prestige they may have accumulated. When they are "alone," they may not be as "hard" as they seem. The repeated line "it must be lonely on the ocean floor" reinforces this sense of isolation and loneliness that the person may feel.
Overall, "Slice Of Life" seems to be a warning against those who use language to deceive or hold power without any legitimate substance. It suggests that those who try to hide behind a facade will ultimately be caught and suffer the consequences. At the same time, it acknowledges the loneliness that may come with such deception and suggests that true power and success can only come through authenticity.
