Every step a closer's a step that we both will regret,
Keeping a tally, but who can keep track?
Your overreacting is taking me back to a time better left alone,
Holding onto the phone,
Holding onto this glass,
Holding onto the memory of what didn't last.
They'll never come.
So dry your eyes,
It's better,
Now it's done
Keep a tight grip like a child holding onto a swing set,
Waiting and hoping to find what I can't figure out yet,
Please don't unless this is something to me,
Another nightmare instead of a dream,
Better left alone,
Holding onto the phone,
Holding onto this glass,
Holding onto the memory of what didn't last.
Waiting for better words,
They'll never come.
So dry your eyes,
Its better,
Holding onto the phone,
Holding onto this glass,
Holding onto the memory of what didn't last.
Waiting for better words,
They'll never come.
So dry your eyes,
Its better,
Now it's done
I never lost so much
I never lost so much
I never lost so much
Holding onto the phone,
Holding onto this glass,
Holding onto the memory of what didn't last.
Waiting for better words,
They'll never come.
So dry your eyes,
Holding onto the phone,
Holding onto this glass,
Holding onto the memory of what didn't last.
Waiting for better words,
They'll never come.
So dry your eyes,
Its better,
Now it's done
The opening lines of "Moving in slow like the smoke from your cigarette" insinuates that the actions taken between the two parties involved are slow and ultimately destructive, just like the smoke from a cigarette. The next line, "Every step a closer's a step that we both will regret," suggests that every move made by either party makes the situation worse, and in the end, there will be no winner. The lyrics "keeping a tally, but who can keep track?" represents the idea that although both parties are keeping track of one another's faults or mistakes, it's nearly impossible to keep track of it all. The following line, "your overreacting is taking me back to a time better left alone," suggests that the current situation is reminding the singer of a past traumatic event that would be better left buried.
The lines, "holding onto the phone, holding onto this glass, holding onto the memory of what didn't last" has a strong sense of despair and hopelessness. Perhaps indicating that the singer is holding onto a past event that cannot be changed. In the line "waiting for better words, they'll never come", the singer may be waiting for an explanation or a solution that'll never arrive, again emphasising the hopelessness that is felt. Finally, "now it's done" implies that the singer has reached a conclusion, and it's time to put this pain to rest and move on, accepting that there is no solution.
